Coaching Employee Performance

Coaching Employee Performance

Have you ever had to work with an employee to improve performance? Have you ever felt like you were at the end of your rope with an employee who just didn’t seem to ‘get it’?
Coaching an employee may be an opportunity for a win/win situation. While it may seem that you’ve tried everything; trying to understand what the blocks are for the employee, I wonder how many of us think about coaching as opposed to considering discipline, as a way to achieve our goals.

Know your key selling features

Know your key selling features

If you are applying for an advertised job, what important qualifications are they looking for? If you meet those requirements, those will be your key selling features. However, if you are targeting employers that haven’t advertised any positions, then you have to decide what you think will be most important to them.

How to Buy a Quality Business Suit

How to Buy a Quality Business Suit

The purchase of a quality business suit in late summer or early fall is a necessity. In the cooler months many employers raise their expectations for professional dress. For many of us this means exchanging cotton Polo’s and silk t-shirts for a new suit. When buying a suit, the label and the price tag aren’t always the best way to judge value. By evaluating the construction details of the business suit before you buy, you will make a wise investment that will add to your professional image.

Restoring Trust

Restoring Trust

What does it mean to me when I say that I trust someone?

Trust, to me, means that I can have confidence in a person to do what she says she will do. I can believe in her when she’s given me her word on something…and I can feel that she truly has my best interests at heart.

It means that a person won’t take advantage of me and she’ll be honest with me and because I know that; I am comfortable in being honest with her. It means that if she does make a mistake – she will take accountability for that mistake and not try to make excuses for what happened.

Cover letters – are they necessary?

Cover letters - are they necessary?

I’ve been following a recent discussion on an email list about the need for cover letters, and it’s caused me to think about the evolution of cover letters and resumes. Here is what I see. Most resumes are at least 2 pages long (although I believe 95% of them should be shorter than they are), and so we are accustomed to seeing a summary section in the top half of the first page. This profile usually highlights the candidate’s key qualifications for the job they are targeting.

The Ball is in Your Court

The Ball is in Your Court

Think back three short years when skilled candidates were scarce. Some businesses closing their doors for lack of employees; wages at Tim Horton’s in Alberta rose close to $20/hour, university students were working all summer, and even if you were fortunate enough to hire skilled employees, retaining them was another matter!

Dress for Success..the Modern Way

Dress for Success..the Modern Way

DRESS FOR SUCCESS… what does it mean? These days those three little words seem to cause more confusion than ever. Appropriate dress used to be determined by the industry or profession. Now it also varies from business to business. It’s up to each company to determine it’s own standards for professional dress. Unfortunately today, not every company does.

Targeting the Right People

Targeting the Right People

On the average day, I read somewhere between 10 and 50 job postings. Yes, the life of a professional recruiter is not a glamorous one – shocking but true. Also shocking and true is the fact that 90% of those job ads have something in common that limits their effectiveness in a huge way.

So you’ve been through the palaver of job hunting, you’ve nailed a great role and you’ve successfully handed in your letter of resignation. Your boss definitely wasn’t happy about it (mind you, how would you feel if he was?) but he seemed to accept it ok. Since then, you’ve been rubbing your colleagues’ noses in it and planning the biggest leaving bash the company has ever seen. Then what?
