Tourism Careers

Tourism careers span a wide range of jobs within a very diverse field. They can include opportunities for travel, outdoor and indoor recreation, meeting new people, and planning and participating in unique events -- a multitude of fun and rewarding opportunities to those who pursue a career in this industry.

With the 2010 Winter Games coming to BC, opportunities to work in tourism abound. The sector offers both entry-level and management track positions in areas ranging from hotel operations and management to travel planning to eco-tourism and adventure guiding. With nearly 18,000 tourism companies in BC, the job opportunities are plentiful, and there is also room for those who wish to start their own enterprises. About 300 to 500 new tourism businesses are started each year.

Mining Careers

Mining careers are booming in Canada and opportunities abound for job-seekers. While mining is one of the fastest growing industries in Canada, it is also experiencing an unprecedented amount of attrition through retirement of older workers. An estimated 80,000 people will be needed in the mining industry within the next 10 years to meet current and future industry needs and to fill positions vacated by retirees.

As a major player in the global minerals and metals industry, Canada is home to more than 65 percent of the world’s exploration and mining companies. Canada’s mining and exploration firms hold the largest share of the global exploration market. In 2004, more than 1,100 of the world’s listed exploration and mining companies were Canadian, accounting for more than 30 percent of global mineral exploration.

Construction Careers

Construction careers have taken off, meaning workers are in high demand. British Columbia’s construction industry is in a growth phase due primarily to residential building investments which have arisen out of stronger household growth, rising incomes and lower interest rates. In the non-residential sector, engineering construction has shown the most rapid growth over the past few years due largely to increases in government investment. Construction is a $130-billion industry that accounts for more than 12 percent of Canada’s economy. All of which means it’s a great time to pursue a career in construction.

The province houses a number of clusters of high-tech companies working in the areas of digital media, biotechnology and environmental technologies. But people who understand technology are required in all industries—and with the proliferation of technology into all aspects of life and work, including in many more traditional industries, job prospects are plentiful.

Healthcare Careers

Healthcare careers are suited to those who are interested in caring for people. As BC’s population ages along with the rest of Canada – and more Baby Boomers retire, more and more healthcare services will be required. This will provide greater opportunity for people in healthcare careers.

Healthcare careers are incredibly varied – ranging from highly specialized and technical positions to those involving the most basic personal care. They can include care of people or animals, a focus on specific afflictions or preventative measures, care of the mind or the body, or a focus on the development of remedies or treatment modalities. There is also a growing consumer interest in alternative medicine, which has lead to many opportunities for healthcare practitioners to offer services in these areas.
