How to Succeed in a Remote Job Interview

In the words of the famous musician Mr. Dylan, ‘the times they are a-changin’. Not so long ago, it seemed as if all you needed to succeed in an interview was to shake the right hand. Now, the social and professional dance has become increasingly complex. Multiple interviewing stages, circus hoops, the right hobbies and an alignment of the stars seem to be the current interviewing trend. Or at least that’s how it feels.

Thankfully, we’re here to tell you that though it may be slightly more complex, it is manageable and not as complicated as it may feel.

There are truly only a few things particular to remote or virtual interviews. Most of your in-person interviewing skills will translate to video with a few tweaks. If you need to practice your basic interviewing skills, here are 4 tips on how to succeed in job interviews.

Advice on How to Succeed in Interviews

1. Check your video, audio and internet quality

First, ensure that you have the right technology, software and internet connection. You do not want to be interrupted halfway through your interview by failed tech, or experience difficulties in starting the video call. It will speak volumes if your technology is outdated, or you didn’t put in the effort to secure a good internet connection. Ensure that you have previously tested out the software you will be using for the interview, whether it’s FaceTime, Zoom or any other program. Check the camera quality, make sure you are visible and not blurred out.

2. Ensure Your Home is Interview-Friendly

Having an interview-appropriate setting will show your potential employer that you are both prepared and competent. Make sure that you have proper lighting on your face, natural lighting will work the best. Check out some specific lighting and video-call tips here. Make sure you have a clean and quiet environment. Avoid bedrooms and stick to a more professional setting, such as an office or living room.

3. Dress Professionally — As You Would For In-person Interviews

Third, make sure you dress appropriately for the call, though the format may tempt you to believe presentation doesn’t matter – it does! Take a look at The Balance’s suggestions for interview clothing. Make sure you aim for business professional, not comfy lounge wear.

4. Practice Your Interviewing Skills

Fourth, remember that your interview skills matter as much in a remote interview as in person. One of the trickiest things in a video call is eye contact! Remember that to make ‘eye contact’ with your interviewer, stare into your camera, don’t look at your screen the whole time. As video calls can sometimes lag, make sure you allow the interviewer to finish their question, and take a second before you answer. That pause will make sure you don’t accidentally interrupt your interviewer and give you time to reflect on the question. Don’t be afraid of some pauses.
