Career Resolutions to Make in 2018

By

A new year means an opportunity to set new goals for yourself! Some new year’s resolutions can be stereotypical (leading to the January crowds at your gym), so consider setting some career-related resolutions for yourself this year. Here are some things you can do in 2018 to set yourself up for career success down the road.

Develop your personal brand

The thought of promoting yourself can feel awkward, which is why interviews can be so tough, but it’s a great way to establish yourself as a leader and can be especially helpful the next time you’re looking for a job. Getting started is easy – you can share your thoughts and opinions via social media, get involved with local organizations in your field, or even take the plunge and speak at a workshop or panel event!

Keep your skills up to date

There are plenty of things you can do to keep your skills up to date, including online courses and certifications. If you’ve been in your job for a while, you may have started to get comfortable with your current responsibilities. To help further your growth, take the time and effort to learn new skills, set higher goals that will challenge you, and take on more responsibilities.

Think about your next step now

This doesn’t necessarily mean actively looking for new jobs, especially if you’re in a role that you still have room for growth in and with a company where you fit in. It’s always a good idea to think about what your next steps could be, because that can help you build a plan. Do a search online for your desired job title and check out the skills and requirements. Are you missing any of the things that are listed? Take the time now to develop these skills!

Get out to more networking events

Here at BCjobs.ca, we’re big advocates of networking and getting involved in your community. Networking is helpful at every step of your career, not only when you’re looking for a job, and can be done online (like within Slack communities) or offline (like at Meetup events). This is also a great way to get further engaged with topics that you’re interested in and are often learning opportunities. Be sure to check out our Tech Talent Meetup and Sales Talent Meetup groups to see if our events are a fit for you!

We’re getting ready for a big year in 2018 and with these suggestions, we hope you are too! If you’re looking to make a big career move in the new year, you can get started now with a search on BCjobs.ca.
