yáqʷa Development Corporation (YDC) was established to improve the operational efficiencies and advance the economic growth of the Haisla Nation. Haisla Nation Council  (“HNC”) maintains legal control over YDC, however, YDC will have a degree of autonomy through it’s delegation of authority, governance and board structure, which will include a blend of both Haisla members and independent, non-Nation members.

About the Opportunity

YDC in affiliation with Haisla Nation Council have an exciting opportunity for a full-time Chief Executive Officer to join our team in Haisla, BC, with an opportunity for to work hybrid after orientation.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, you will be primarily responsible for driving the economic growth and sustainability of yáqʷa Development Corporation through strategic leadership and direction.

Your key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing and implementing strategic plans to advance economic development goals
  • Building strong relationships with Haisla membership, First Nations communities, and stakeholders
  • Overseeing financial health, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting
  • Leading operational management and ensuring alignment with organizational goals
  • Supporting economic empowerment and community development initiatives
  • Ensuring compliance with laws, regulations, and governance standards
  • Identifying and mitigating operational, financial, and reputational risks
  • Liaising with Chief and Council, private organizations and government entities

 More About You 

To qualify, you will need a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Economics, Public Administration, or a related field, with 5+ years of experience in economic development, business management, or a related field, preferably within Indigenous or First Nations contexts, will also be essential.

Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:

  • A Master's degree in a relevant field (asset)
  • Developed experience in Chief and Council/Government relations
  • Strong understanding of Indigenous rights, culture, and socio-economic issues
  • Demonstrated experience in financial management and strategic planning
  • Excellent communication skills and stakeholder engagement ability
  • Developed experience with economic/business development processes such as feasibility studies, cost analyses, etc.
  • Familiarity with Land code or Land use

As our ideal candidate, you will possess strong ethical principles, cultural competence, humility, and a commitment to transparency, integrity, and accountability. These soft skills, along with your ability to work sensitively and respectfully within Indigenous communities, will make you succeed in this role. You should also demonstrate a proven track record of executive leadership and have the ability to navigate through potential political challenges and governance relations with effectiveness and diplomacy.
