Job Summary

An exciting opportunity to contribute to BC's Environmental Emergency Branch

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy's environmental emergency mandate is to plan for, coordinate, implement and manage a program to protect human health, the environment and infrastructure in the event of an environmental emergency or disaster. The province receives between 4,000 - 5,000 spill calls a year through the provincial spill reporting hotline and the Environmental Emergency Branch helps to meet this mandate by developing and implementing tools to prepare for, respond to, and recover from spills of harmful substances.

To act as a subject matter resource for the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy's Environmental Emergency Branch (EEB), and provide biological, chemical and other environmental impact assessment (EIA) support to legislated and other statutory decision makers during environmental emergencies. This position is responsible for implementing requirements of spillers to conduct environmental recovery operations following hazardous material spills and oversees the design, implementation and assessment of environmental monitoring programs for EIA studies. Other responsibilities include the development of site-specific recovery strategies where appropriate, provides EEB with impact assessment support for recovery and enforcement activities under the Environmental Management Act, maintains knowledge of current research in the field and coordinates response strategies with program staff. This position also involves monitoring and sampling activities during an environmental incident in cooperation with other provincial, federal and local government agencies. The position may represent the Ministry, working with all levels of government, First Nations, industry, land users, members of the public and the media, to lead education and awareness and promote the EEB's recovery mandate.

Job Requirements:

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's Degree (or higher) in the environmental science field (e.g. chemistry, biology, toxicology, environmental sciences).
  • Minimum one year of experience interpreting and applying environmental management legislation and policy.
  • Minimum one year of experience leading and/or conducting environmental sampling and monitoring.

Preference may be given to applicants with one or more of the following:
  • Master's Degree (or higher) in the environmental science field (e.g. chemistry, biology, toxicology, environmental sciences).
  • Experience working under the Environmental Management Act (or comparable act in another jurisdiction).
  • Experience developing, implementing and/or providing regulatory oversight or analyzing remediation and/or restoration plans.
  • Experience conducting terrestrial, aquatic and/or marine environmental impact assessments and making recommendations.
  • Registered Professional Biologist designation.
  • Self-identify as Indigenous.

Provisos /Willingness statements:
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver's Licence or equivalent.
  • Meet safety standards of WorkSafe BC.
  • May be required to operate a variety of equipment.
  • Required to take in-house and certification training to perform tasks required in some roles of Emergency Management activities.
  • May be required to fly in aircraft (fixed wing and rotary).
  • May be required to work extended/long hours including weekends.
  • May be required to travel and overnight in remote locations.
  • May be required to support incident response in the Department Operations Centre, Provincial Regional EmergencyOperations Centreor similar.
