Role Overview

Reporting to the Manager, Projects Metallurgy, the Principal Metallurgist provides enterprise-level technical leadership in extractive metallurgy, delivering deep expertise that strengthens geo-metallurgical models, and enhances Teck's broader technical capabilities. This role ensures high-quality metallurgical direction, reliable execution of laboratory programs, and the development of standard processes that contributes value across Teck's assets.

This includes leading all aspects of metallurgical test work programs, coordinating laboratory and plant-based activities, managing technical staff, and ensuring the timely delivery of high-quality metallurgical outputs that support operational performance and asset value work programs.

The primary activities of this role relate to projects understanding and advancement as described above but can also include support of operations activities as needed. The more operational related activities can include optimizing operational performance, performing plant sampling and test programs and are part of the responsibility area of the Manager, Operations Metallurgy.

As an SME in metallurgy, the Principal Metallurgist establishes and governs metallurgical practices that underpin geo-metallurgical models, plant design, and broader technical decision making. In this role, the incumbent upholds the highest technical standards, demonstrates strong work ethic, and provides mentorship across Teck. By embedding robust metallurgical principles into mining technical fields, engaging with internal and external partners, and promoting multi-functional collaboration, the Principal Metallurgist improves organizational capability, critical thinking, and innovation.

The Principal Metallurgist actively fosters internal and external collaborations to advance core technical competencies, encourages innovation, and remains at the forefront of emerging processing technologies, modelling approaches, and metallurgical best practices. Their leadership ensures Teck continues to improve metallurgical performance across assets, generating additional value through improved understanding, optimized processes, and stronger technical guidance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures.
  • Act as metallurgy SME, providing expert guidance across projects (and operations as needed), and driving the development and optimization of metallurgical models, processes, and performance indicators.
  • Define and implement metallurgical best practices to ensure reliable, cost-effective programs that improve operational efficiency, metallurgical recovery, and overall business value. ‑effective programs that improve operational efficiency, metallurgical recovery, and overall business value.
  • Lead and coordinate metallurgical work programs, including the oversight of technical staff, contractors, and external partners, to ensure high quality execution and timely delivery.‑quality execution and timely delivery.
  • Communicate metallurgical study outcomes through high-quality technical reports and impactful presentations at all organizational levels, ensuring metallurgical data is clearly interpreted and employed to support transparent, evidence-based decisions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or related technical field; MSc or PhD is considered an asset.
  • Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) under EGBC, or eligible for registration.
  • Minimum 15 years of relevant experience in extractive metallurgy, including process optimization, flowsheet development, metallurgical balancing, and laboratory or pilot-scale test work across a range of commodities and processing technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to rapidly learn and integrate new technical domains through deep critical thinking, strong conceptual understanding, and continuous professional development.
  • Clear, ethical communicator who fosters strong leadership, collaboration, and trust among operations teams, project participants, and external partners.
  • Confirmed ability to support and influence highly collaborative, multi‑disciplinary teams, sharing best practices and driving alignment across operations and projects.
  • Strong capability in data interpretation and application of critical thinking to make sound, transparent, and defensible metallurgical decisions.
  • Demonstrates advanced reasoning, risk management, and sound judgment when operating under uncertainty, incomplete information, or evolving technical conditions.

Pay Range: CAD $147,000 - $182,000 per year

The actual amount offered is determined based on the successful candidate's relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
