Role Overview

Reporting to the Manager, Environment, the Superintendent Integrated Environmental Programs is accountable for leading a team of environmental professionals and working collaboratively across a complex industrial site to develop and drive implementation of environmental strategies for Trail Operations towards continuous improvement. The scope includes air emission reduction strategies, risk reduction water management programs, managing historical on-site and off-site environmental impacts through remediation programs, biodiversity management, aquatic effects monitoring, and supporting work involving Teck's land holdings in the West Kootenays. Developing and maintaining relations with the local community, Indigenous representatives, and provincial and federal government agencies is also an important element of this role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Lead a team of environmental professionals and manage the annual planning and effective control of multimillion dollar budgets
  • Accountable for environmental remediation programs under the Contaminated Sites Regulation for areas historically impacted by Trail Operations.
  • Advance groundwater remediation projects and programs for affected groundwater associated with historical activities at Trail Operations
  • Oversee implementation of the Wide Area Remediation Plan (WARP) which sets out measures to address impacts related to historical air emissions from the smelter for a 25,000 ha zone surrounding the Trail Operations site
  • Advance the Lower Columbia Ecosystem Management Program (LCEMP) to address impacts to wildlands in the EMA and support Teck's biodiversity management planning including working closely with the Lands management team.
  • Be a Teck representative on the Trail Area Health & Environment Committee and be accountable for delivery of Teck's responsibilities as a partner in Trail Area Health & Environment Program to inform continued reduction of children's lead exposure.
  • Accountable for implementing Teck's Aquatic Effects Monitoring Program (AEMP) to evaluate aquatic health of the Lower Columbia River
  • Responsible for developing and implementing strategies to further reduce community exposure to SO2 emissions while considering changing regulatory guidance and business needs
  • Responsible for developing and implementing strategies to further reduce ambient emissions for key metals in the local community with focus on reduction of ambient Lead in fugitive dust and meeting the children's blood lead level target for the area
  • Responsible for the development and implementation of strategies related to managing the risk for inground water retaining structures and for stormwater management infrastructure
  • Oversee the direction and scope of noise mitigation and monitoring intended to minimize exceedances of nuisance community noise levels

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 10-15 years of progressive leadership experience in heavy industry, strategic resource management, and project oversight within smelting and/or mining operations
  • Bachelor's degree in a science or engineering discipline related to environmental management, or equivalent experience
  • Technical knowledge of Teck Trail Operations or comparable smelting facilities is considered an asset
  • Proven leadership, organizational, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent project management experience with a track record that includes management and technical direction of multiple environmental projects.
  • Technical knowledge of relevant federal and provincial legislation and regulations
  • Experienced in delivering high quality regulatory submissions and related public-facing materials

Pay Range: $135,000 - $185,000

The actual amount offered is determined based on the successful candidate's relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
