Reporting to the Manager, Product Development, you will play a pivotal role in leading the mechanical engineering discipline, balancing hands-on technical design with team leadership, cross-disciplinary coordination, and accountability for project delivery, quality, and performance.

In this position, you will be primarily responsible for guiding and developing a mechanical engineering team while directly contributing to the design, development, and delivery of complex marine-based environmental monitoring systems from concept through fabrication, testing, and deployment.

More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Leading, mentoring, and supporting a mechanical engineering team while remaining actively involved in hands-on design work

  • Coordinating multidisciplinary engineering efforts and managing mechanically led projects with shared ownership across teams
  • Driving projects through the full lifecycle, including requirements definition, detailed design, fabrication support, testing, and integration
  • Working closely with external fabricators and suppliers to ensure designs are manufacturable, robust, and production-ready
  • Overseeing project schedules, budgets, deliverables, and technical risks while maintaining clear communication with stakeholders
  • Establishing and maintaining engineering standards, documentation, and processes aligned with ISO 9001 requirements

About You

To qualify, you will need a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Ocean Engineering, or a related discipline, along with 5+ years of progressive mechanical engineering experience, ideally within marine, ocean, or industrial product development environments. You will also be required to be registered as a Professional Engineer in British Columbia, or demonstrate clear eligibility and active pursuit of P.Eng designation.

In addition, you must have the knowledge, skills, or experience in the following:

  • Experience leading or mentoring engineering teams while remaining actively hands-on in design work
  • Strong mechanical design experience delivering products from concept through fabrication, testing, and deployment
  • Exposure to marine, ocean, offshore, or environmental monitoring systems, including floating or subsea structures
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks, including parts, assemblies, and design file management
  • Experience working with fabricators and suppliers to ensure designs are manufacturable and production-ready
  • Knowledge of mechanical, materials, and reliability design principles for demanding operating environments
  • Experience producing high-quality engineering documentation such as drawings, bills of material, and work instructions
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001 quality management systems or structured engineering process environments
  • Willingness and ability to travel when necessary

As our ideal candidate, you will possess strong leadership and communication skills, a collaborative mindset, and the ability to lead by example in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary engineering environment. You are detail-oriented, motivated by quality, and comfortable balancing technical depth with people leadership and project accountability.

This is a hands-on engineering leadership role for a doer-leader who thrives in small, highly engaged teams and enjoys solving complex, real-world design challenges. AXYS is looking for someone who brings both technical credibility and the ability to motivate, connect, and elevate a growing mechanical engineering team while delivering innovative marine technologies with global impact.
