Position Summary
Are you interested in an opportunity to grow professionally within a positive and progressive culture? Northern Health is seeking a Director with significant management and leadership experience to join our Laboratory Services department.

In accordance with the mission, vision, values, and strategic priorities of Northern Health, the Director, Laboratory Operations provides accountable strategic and operational leadership for Laboratory Services across Northern Health. The role is responsible for the planning, delivery, performance, and continuous improvement of laboratory services, including anatomic pathology, hematology, chemistry, transfusion medicine, microbiology, point-of-care testing, and other laboratory disciplines across a complex, multi-site environment.
The Director is accountable for ensuring the safe, efficient, high-quality, and sustainable delivery of laboratory services that meet clinical needs, support patient-centered care, and align with Northern Health priorities, provincial standards, accreditation requirements, and regulatory expectations. The role provides executive oversight of operational performance, financial and capital planning, workforce and labor relations, quality improvement, patient and staff safety, and risk management across all laboratory environments.
Working in close partnership with pathologists, laboratory professionals, clinical leaders, Health Service Administrators, and regional and provincial partners, the Director supports integrated service delivery, innovation, evidence-based practice, and continuous improvement. The Director represents Northern Health Laboratory Services on internal and external committees, working groups, and provincial initiatives, and contributes to system-level planning, performance reporting, and accountability initiatives that support the long-term sustainability and excellence of laboratory services across Northern Health.

Starting salary will be approximately from $130,864 to $163,579 and will be based on education, training, experience, and salaries of similar positions.

Qualfications
• Master's degree in health administration, Laboratory Medicine, or related discipline plus seven (7) years of progressive leadership experience in laboratory or diagnostic services operations, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Demonstrated experience providing strategic and operational leadership, including responsibility for service planning, quality and patient safety, workforce management, financial oversight, and capital planning.
• Experience leading within a unionized healthcare environment, including labor relations, performance management, and application of collective agreements.
• Certification or licensure with a recognized regulatory body (e.g., CSMLS, BCSLS) relevant to laboratory services or equivalent professional designation.

Skills and Abilities:
• Demonstrated ability to lead complex systems and regionally distributed laboratory services, balancing local operational needs with organizational and provincial priorities.
• Strong strategic thinking, analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, with the ability to translate system-level direction into operational outcomes.
• Proven ability to lead change, innovation, and continuous improvement in a dynamic healthcare environment.
• Demonstrated financial, operational, and capital planning acumen, including the use of data to inform performance improvement and resource allocation.
• Excellent communication, relationship-building, and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to work effectively with pathologists, clinical leaders, operational partners, and provincial stakeholders.
• Ability to operate effectively in an environment characterized by competing priorities, complexity, and ambiguity.
• Valid BC Driver's License.
