Trust Assurance Auditor (12 Month Contract), Vancouver Island, BC

Who you are!
You have a minimum of 5 years’ experience in auditing role required. Degree in Finance and an accounting designation (CPA.CA, CGA, or CMA) is required.  Strong knowledge and or training in fraud related courses or CFE or CIA designation considered a plus.  Superb communication and technical skills, along with organization and problem solving abilities is a must. In addition to having excellent attention to detail and the ability to work independently while adhering to the strict deadlines in accuracy is paramount.

The Role
Working under the Manager and Trust Assurance Leaders, the candidate will conduct compliance audits in accordance to the legal rules  to ensure compliance with the Legal Division’s Rules and reviews annual Trust Reports.

Where is it based?
In Downtown Vancouver, it is centrally located and a dream to commute to via transit.

Responsibilities include:

  • Conducting visits to new and established law firms throughout BC to perform compliance audits to ensure lawyers comply with the trust accounting rules and to identify potential misconduct related to financial matters.
  • Providing feedback to lawyers regarding their level of compliance with the rules and what steps should be taken to remedy any deficiencies and recommending non-compliant firms to Professional Conduct, or Practice Standards Departments.
  • Reviewing annual Trust Report submissions and using professional judgment to determine if the firm’s level of compliance with the Division 7 Rules is acceptable.
  • Composing letters and reviewing correspondence from lawyers regarding Trust Reports, rule violations and other matters.
  • Responding to inquiries regarding trust accounting, the Trust Administration Fee and Division 7 rule interpretations.
  • Participating in the review and refinement of the Trust Assurance Program, including the continued development of audit procedures, review and revision of the Division 7 rules, and reference material such as the Trust Accounting Handbook.
  • Assisting new firms in understanding the rules and answer questions on site and any future questions regarding the Law Society Accounting Rules.
  • Providing oral evidence supporting the referral to Professional Conduct, when required.


  • Degree in Finance and Accounting designation is required
  • At least 5 years of Auditing experience  
  • Strong knowledge of legal accounting rules and general law firm accounting rules is an asset
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to working independently in an environment where attention to detail, accuracy and confidentiality are paramount.
  • Knowledge of the Division 7 Trust Accounting Rules and general Law Firm accounting
  • Travel will be required 25% of the time so must have a valid BC Driver’s license and access to a vehicle  

Timeline for this role
