This is skilled technical work at the journeyman level in monitoring, installing, operating, repairing and maintaining the City's automated traffic signal systems and street lights. An employee of this class reviews traffic and pedestrian signal operations; installs aboveground and underground duct work and conduits; provides electrical installation, maintenance and repair support for sewage, water and drainage pumping stations and other City facilities; may supervise the work of one or more subordinates engaged in less skilled tasks. Makes necessary changes to improve intersection safety or vehicular flow. Installs, replaces, repairs and maintains streetlights and metal signal and street light poles. Performs underground utility locating. Provides electrical maintenance and repair support to operators and other field crews engaged in operations and maintenance; installs, replaces and programs programmable logic controllers; maintains, troubleshoots and installs motor control centres; checks defective electrical equipment and replaces electrical parts. Maintains and repairs a variety of related electrical equipment. Maintains a computerized maintenance program and inventory for traffic signal and street light installations and repairs. Performs related work as required.
Qualifications include completion of grade 12 supplemented by the completion of a recognized Trade Certificate of Qualification - Electrician plus considerable experience at the journeyman level or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Thorough knowledge of standard practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the work; and of the statutes, bylaws, rules, regulations and policies applicable to traffic operations and the Canadian Electrical Code. Considerable knowledge of hazards and safety precautions of the trade and of programmable logic controllers, personal computers and related software, variable frequency drives, SCADA and radio modem systems and motor control systems. Ability to install, operate, monitor, repair and maintain computerized traffic signal systems and other electrical equipment used by the City; to prepare cost estimates, specifications and drawings for electrical, traffic control and street light installations, and to read and interpret plans and specifications; to operate a truck, aerial bucket truck, a variety of small hand tools and electrical testing equipment; to communicate effectively orally and in writing; to deal tactfully and diplomatically with staff and the general public; to assign and supervise the work of staff; and to work in inclement weather. Skill in the use and care of all tools essential to the work. Driver's License for the Province of British Columbia and Certificate of Qualification-Electrician are required.
