Job Description

MDA Halifax has recently won a NATO contract to provision the Functional Services for Command and Control of Maritime Operations (TRITON). This is exciting work that builds on work that MDA has already done with RCN and DND over the last 20 years. As we branch out into new arenas and expand our work we need to grow our team as we grow our expertise in Command and Control.

Position Description:

This position will have the candidate working hand in hand with the Systems Engineering, System Development and Test teams to assist with the definition and development of automated Test Procedures using Java based tools, developing the automated test code following standard Behaviour Driven Design (BDD) practices. Currently looking at using Gherkin/Cucumber but are open to using the best technology for getting the work completed. There is a fair amount of development expected from this position, in addition to a minimal amount of general test support. The candidate will be required to develop majority of code to support the tests.

There is a fast paced test schedule that may require the successful candidate to travel to The Hague and possibly other locations in Europe to support testing at the customer sites starting in 2019 and running steadily through to 2021.

This position will allow the candidate to gain experience in the field of Operational Military Command and Control and Maritime Security Systems. The candidate will be joining a well-established systems engineering company, working closely with the development team to provide automated test support and direction with the establishment of clear test procedures and establish the desired outcomes prior to the start of the development process.


The Test Developer will be responsible for generating code to support test procedures and test cases to support the BDD process. Responsibilities include:
  • Creating and Maintaining automated tests to support BDD
  • Working with the TRITON Systems Engineering team to describe the feature requirements
  • Outlining the success and failure test criteria for features
  • Developing test procedures and test cases to support TRITON features
  • Developing code to support the test procedures and test cases
  • Executing the developed test code against the code base
  • Reporting on test status and progress
  • Communicating with project team management about progress on testing requirements
  • Supporting the Test Director and other team members with preparations for all the testing related deliverables associated with the TRITON program
  • Practicing scrum/agile methodologies and approaches to software execution, becoming an integral part of the TRITON development team

  • Completed post-secondary education: NSCC IT Programming Diploma or B.Sc, M.Sc. or equivalent in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related discipline. Equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.
  • 1-3 years related experience in software development preferred
  • Knowledge of Java, Java EE, Junit, Web Services, SQL, MongoDB, XML, Apache Avro, Kafka, SpringBoot, Maven, Eclipse IDE and Git
  • Knowledge of Software Development Life Cycle
  • Good team player with excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Initiative, follow-through and excellent organizational skills

  • Willingness to code and learn new skills
  • Previous development experience using Test Driven Development or Behaviour Driven Development
  • Experience with IBM DOORS NG and/or with IBM Rational Quality Manager
  • Experience with any requirements management testing tools
  • Experience with any test management tools
  • Familiarity with the various test events that are involved in a military application
