The Ministry of Forests is responsible for the stewardship of provincial Crown land and ensures the sustainable management of forest, wildlife, water and other land-based resources. The Ministry manages these resources in a manner that embraces economic, environmental and social goals of government.

Our District is seeking an individual that enjoys working in a team environment, with a proven track-record for initiative, integrity, and strong problem-solving abilities. The Coast Check Scaler ensures that harvested Crown timber is accurately scaled, assessed for stumpage, and revenues are collected according to the Forest Act, Forest and Range Practices Act, and provincial policy and guidelines. The Coast Check Scaler conducts check scales of previously scaled timber, inspects timber scaling and transportation operations, initiates remedial actions to correct inadequacies identified through check scales and inspections, takes direct enforcement action where violations occur, assists in maintaining scaling standards, and performs administrative and other duties as required. The work may require long hours in the field, including some extended remote assignments, in all weather conditions. The ideal candidate will be safety-oriented, show a willingness to embrace new technology and be physically capable of working in challenging conditions.

Job Requirements:

• Secondary School graduation or equivalent; a combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
• Valid Coast Scaler Licence with required endorsements.
• Valid BC Class 5 Driver's Licence.
• Minimum of two (2) years of related operational coastal scaling experience.

Willingness Statements:

• Required to perform check scales and inspections outside of regular work hours.
• Successful completion of Basic Law training within six (6) months of appointment as a Forest Officer & Forest Official.

About this Position:
Amendment December 1, 2023: posting closing date extended to January 16, 2024.
Two permanent, full time positions are currently available in Port McNeill.
This location receives a bi-weekly isolation allowance (add to pay).
Applicants who do not fully meet the required qualifications may be considered for this position, but at a lower classification.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies.
