Job Description

The Team Lead, Electronic Payments supervises a group of close to 10 staff involved in computer processing, reconciliation, balancing, settlement, tracing and troubleshooting functions. The Team Lead provides leadership in ensuring policies, standards, practices and CPA and Network rules are adhered to, risks are controlled and processing deadlines are met. They also provide expert advice on applicable CPA Rules to clients, and act as the first step of the escalation process for resolving production problems, customer complaints and items in dispute.

You'll be primarily accountable for:

  • Developing and maintaining effective procedures, standards and practices for all departmental functions, and ensures that confidentiality, security and risk management controls are well documented and maintained;
  • Ensuring a positive work environment and awareness by all staff of company policies, goals and objectives, and creates an environment oriented towards trust, open two-way communication and cohesive team effort;
  • Providing initial and ongoing staff training and coaching to ensure performance meets objectives; encouraging and motivating staff to continually upgrade their skills, and ensuring
    staff are cross-trained to enhance their development objectives and to provide necessary support for vacation/sick-day coverage;
  • Conducting performance evaluations with staff; facilitating the identification of career objectives and preparation of staff development and learning plans; keeping Manager apprised of
    performance issues and implementing approved disciplinary measures; and participating with the Manager in hiring, salary adjustment and performance management decisions;
  • Monitoring daily workflow activity, identifying priorities, assessing resources, developing and communicating action plans to meet deadlines and achieve unit objectives;
  • Reviewing work processes and workload on an ongoing basis with a focus on finding more efficient ways of getting the work processed, and improving quality and quantity of output will controlling or reducing costs;
  • Scheduling full-time and temporary staff to meet production deadlines;
  • Monitoring the processing of paper clearings, electronic clearings, deposits and tracing practices and ensuring that risks associated are controlled, and promptly reporting exceptions to normal risks to management. Also monitoring and assessing the performance and effectiveness of equipment, systems applications and procedures, and ensuring proper care and maintenance of equipment and facilities;
  • Establishing and maintaining key contacts and relationships with Credit Unions, vendors, suppliers, banking system providers, corporate clients and counterparts at other financial institutions to ensure quality service levels are achieved;
  • Providing expert advice to Credit Unions on the CPA rules relating to paper clearing, electronic clearings returned and re-directed items and other such matters, and acting as the Credit Union's first step of escalation for resolving items in dispute;
  • Monitoring activity and recommending changes to Credit Union procedures, forms, and fees etc. to streamline processes and improve effectiveness;
  • Participating in the planning and preparation of the unit annual budget, monitoring and controlling revenues and expenses to meet budget objectives, and providing regular feedback
    to manager;
  • Maintaining currently knowledge of Credit Union Central of Canada (CUCC)'s policies, processes and standards and of the CPA rules applicable to the work.


The ideal candidate possesses:

    • A university degree in business administration or related discipline, including courses in
      accounting and personal computer applications and supplemented by courses in employee supervision, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • A minimum of 5 years relevant experience in a financial institution or related environment, including experience in the leadership of staff.
    • Significant knowledge and understanding of CPA Rules and risk management as it
      relates to the processing, clearing and settlement of items, and of the
      automated systems supporting these various functions.
    •  Ability to cooperatively set objectives with staff, prioritize and set clear direction and
      expectations, build excellent team relationships, foster a sense of urgency and dedication to meeting production deadlines and monitor progress against established objectives.
    • Strong analytical skills and demonstrated ability in developing effective solutions to diverse problems.
    • Strong communication skills both oral and in writing with clients, vendors, suppliers and other co-workers and adapts easily to changing priorities and business needs.
