Fort St. John is located in beautiful Northern British Columbia, 478 km northeast of Prince George and 1,237 km north of Vancouver.  Fort St. John is situated near the border with neighbouring Alberta, 214 km west of Grande Prairie, Alberta.  The Peace River North School District is located on the eastern side of the Rocky Mountains in the northern tip of the Canadian Prairies.  The region’s economy is prosperous and expanding. This positive economic outlook is based on the petrochemical, agriculture, forestry, tourism and commercial/service industries.

Highlights of our educational program include a commitment to early intervention, early and late French Immersion, inclusion based student support services, a band program, the meaningful integration of technology, an Aboriginal student support program, an Outdoor Education site, a strong focus on transitions to careers, a nationally recognized Wireless Writing Program, strong community connections, and a supportive culture of action research and teacher collaboration.

A temporary full-time (1.0) Primary/Prep K-3 teacher is required at Buick Creek Elementary School effective immediately to June 30, 2017.   

We offer $700 relocation allowance for teachers from BC, AB and Yukon and up to $1000 for teachers from other areas.  In addition, we provide $2400 recruitment allowance (paid over 10 months of the school year, based on the FTE).  Also, housing at Buick Creek Elementary is subsidized and very affordable.  The current salary grid per our teachers’ collective agreement is $46,529 - $87,286.  

Qualifications and Attributes

The ideal candidate will have: 

  • experience teaching in kindergarten or training in early education
  • an educational background for teaching primary age students
  • experience teaching in a multi-aged classroom
  • experience/training/knowledge of Positive Behavior Support (PBS)
  • strong classroom management skills, while maintaining student dignity
  • cognizant of the learning outcomes and evaluation processes outlined in the provincial IRP's
  • supportive of school planning and direction
  • committed to professional development
  • the ability/desire to work collaboratively with students and parents
  • experience planning with Teachers and Education Assistants and a willingness to work in a collaborative model regarding curriculum, assessment, instruction and planning
  • ability to work as part of a team to develop and implement individualized learning plans for students with academic, social, emotional and physical learning difficulties and adjust to the needs of the students
  • familiarity with or willing to become familiar with Performance Standards
  • experience or knowledge of Balanced Literacy, Literacy Place, Assessment for Learning
  • knowledge of differentiated Instruction, Math Makes Sense, Criterion Referenced Performance Based Assessment, Guided Reading
  • the ability to differentiate instruction and support varying learning needs
  • training in teaching ELL students
  • the ability/desire to work with a partner teacher
  • a valid BC Ministry of Education Teaching Certificate (or eligible for)
