Position Information

Location Coquitlam Campus Salary Range
$71,846 - $115,129 annually. Placement on the faculty salary scale is based on education, professional certification and experience and will be in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
The Opportunity
The faculty member in this position shares responsibility with the Program Coordinator for theplanning and operationalization of the annual Education and Staffing plans for the Psychiatric Nursingdepartment. They have the responsibility to ensure staffing requirementsare met throughout the year by making decisions for alterations in the annual plan due to leaves orsimilar circumstances, and are responsible for the enrollment management processes related to program student admissions. This includes the review of admission requirements for the program (in alignment with Curriculum Coordinator), review of individual applicant admissions when required, tracking, progression, exit, and re-entry activities. This position is a primary applicant liaison and, in conjunction with Year Coordinators in the Psychiatric Nursing department, manages student issues and support for enrolled psychiatric nursing students. This position is responsible for the assessment, planning, and co-creation with other coordinators/faculty, for student-centered engagement activities.

WHAT IT TAKES
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

OPERATIONAL MANAGEMENT :

    • Collaborates with Coordinating Committee for program recognition processes.
    • Participates in planning activities for the implementation of the BSPN program.
    • Participates in the long-range plans for program development, ensuring they are consistent with College policies, British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives ( BCCNM ) Professional Standards, Code of Ethics, Scope of Practice and entry-level competencies.
    • Collaborates with the Curriculum Coordinator and the Program Support and Services Specialist to maintain currency of the information book, online catalogue and BSPN website.
    • Jointly responsible with Program Coordinator for ensuring year-round oversight of operational management responsibilities during vacation or leave periods.
    • Provides advice to Coordinating Council members on matters related to student issues, processes and policy.

STAFFING RESPONSIBILITIES :

    • Co-creates annual Education plan and staffing plan with Program Coordinator. Liaises with Program Coordinator about timetabling as required for coordinated operations.
    • Works with Program Coordinator to develop faculty workload assignments in consultation with faculty, based upon program needs and within the parameters of the approved education plan.
    • Develops, coordinates, and revises the faculty-staffing plan and reviews the final plan with the Program Coordinator in conjunction with the education plan, adhering to collective agreement provisions.
    • Manages and consults with the Program Coordinator as required on the implementation of the education plan throughout the year. Monitors data re: class enrolment and statistics and adjusts education plan in consultation with Program Coordinator in alignment with data
    • Review requests for planned leaves of absences for faculty and recommends a decision to the Program Coordinator.
    • Manages ongoing staffing changes during the year necessitated by changes to available faculty. Communicates changes to Dean/Associate Dean, Program Coordinator, Coordinating Council and Selections as needed. Updates departmental faculty as necessary.
    • Consults with the Program Coordinator on the activities of the Selections Committee related to the selections and hiring of new faculty.
    • Coordinates, with the Selection Committee, the selection of new contract faculty and new regular probationary faculty and arranges interviews and hiring proposals.
    • Initiates the orientation of newly hired faculty and provides the New Faculty orientation guide.
    • Initiates and informs new contract and Regular Probationary Faculty of the Faculty Evaluation process.
    • Coordinates, with the Selection Committee, the selection of faculty peer evaluators for the evaluations of Probationary Regular Faculty and new Contract Faculty.
    • Coordinates the collection of Qualified to Teach of all faculty and reviews with the DOPN Selections Committee.
    • Liaises with DCFA , Douglas College Director of Finance, and HR Advisor as necessary.
STUDENT RELATIONS :

    • Responds as appropriate to inquiries from potential students. Refers potential students to other Douglas College resources when appropriate.
    • Coordinates the admission of students into the BSPN programs. Prepares and coordinates Welcome packages for new students.
    • Reviews health and immunization forms and other admission related documents for new students and coordinates follow up.
    • Liaises with the Registrar's Office regarding the application/admission process.
    • Liaises as required with the Year Coordinator, student, and faculty member when a student exits from the program. Meets with the student upon exit from a course or the program and advises on the process. Ensures all relevant documents are processed.
    • Ensures that requests for program re-admissions and other progression-related issues are reviewed in consultation with the Student Progression Committee and that student requests for re-admission are processed.
    • Uses DOPN Communication and Resolution Guideline to facilitate informal resolution of student concerns.
    • In collaboration with the Program Support and Services Specialist oversees academic student tracking systems. Reviews systems with Program Support and Services Specialist regularly to ensure relevance and efficiency
    • Collaborates with Graduation Officer and Year 4 Coordinator to confirm that all BSPN students have met their graduation requirements.
    • Liaises with student and Graduation Officer in relation to outstanding graduation requirements.
    • Interprets college policy for faculty and students related to student progression.
    • Informs students of the College processes and policies related to issues presented by students including appeals.
    • Collaborates with faculty, students, Program Support and Services Specialist to assist in managing course registration issues.
    • Liaises with and provides Department support to student-directed committees such as the BSPN Peer Mentorship community of practice.
    • Upon receipt of student consent, provides information about student's academic standing related to Employed Student Nurse and BC Care Aide & Community Health Worker Registry applications and other inquiries.
    • Liaises with Indigenous leaders at the college and stakeholders to promote indigenous student admissions and support indigenous students during the program.
DEPARTMENT AND FACULTY RELATIONS :

    • Seeks out internal and external resources in support of ensuing current best practices in student support.
    • Participates in recruitment and information sessions on a rotating basis with the Program Coordinator and Curriculum Coordinator.
DEGREE COMPLETION - STUDENT RELATIONS :

    • Assists in the resolution of student issues at the team level.
    • Coordinates team meetings for Degree Completion.
    • Works closely with the Program Support and Services Specialist to track students choosing BSPN online Degree Completion courses and provides support related to student academic planning as it relates to Degree Completion
QUALIFICATIONS :

    • Current RPN /RN registration with BCCNM . If Selections Committee deems candidates applying for a position equitable in all respects, RPN registration is preferred.
    • Master's Degree required, Doctorate/PhD preferred in nursing or related field
    • A minimum of five years of recent post-secondary (or equivalent) teaching experience in psychiatric nursing with a demonstrated understanding of a variety of current educational methodologies.
    • A minimum of five years of clinical experience with a preference for experience in a variety of nursing practice areas.
    • Demonstrated leadership competence.
    • Demonstrated organizational skills.
    • Demonstrated project management skills.
    • Demonstrated positive and effective interpersonal and networking skills, including teamwork and conflict resolution skills.
    • Working knowledge of all streams of Douglas College Psychiatric Nursing Programs
    • Experience in curriculum development and program evaluation; approvals or accreditation experience preferred.
    • Demonstrated self-direction, motivation, initiative, and creativity.
    • In-depth knowledge related to RPN context and scope of practice.
    • Demonstrated advocacy and commitment to the psychiatric nursing profession.
    • Knowledge of mental health needs and services throughout British Columbia and Canada.
    • Demonstrates an understanding of cultural safety and humility in the context of education and psychiatric nursing practice.
    • Represent the values, goals, and philosophy of the Psychiatric Nursing department and Douglas College.
Additional Information
The Faculty of Health Sciences is seeking a Coordinator for the department of Psychiatric Nursing. This position takes effect September 1, 2025 for an initial one year term with the possibility of an extension(s) up to a maximum of three years. This role has seven (7) sections of time release available for the 2025-2026 academic year.
