Join a professional resource management team dedicated to building and transforming BC's vital water program.

Water is fundamental to BC's communities, ecosystems, food supply and economy. The provincial water program is a diverse group of highly collaborative people who help support and make robust and durable decisions with evidence based policy and sound science. Program staff works with internal and external partners to help ensure provincial water management is effective and sustainable. The program is undergoing an exciting transformation with the implementation of the Water Sustainability Act (WSA). TheWSA supports expanded regulation of groundwater, leading environmental protection practices and new area-based management tools - all which allow water resources to be more effectively managed during times of growth and change.

As the Authorizations Specialist - Water, you will work in a variety of settings, provide professional advice and make recommendations on the allocation of resources and the adjudication of resource authorizations for the Natural Resource Sector. This position will be particularly focused on licensing new and existing groundwater usersand short term use approvals for groundwaterapplications.File reviews will include consideration of source aquifer characteristics, aquatic valuesand environmental flow needs for hydraulically connectedstreams, and consultation with First Nations and stakeholders.A continued focus on improving the regulatory approach of our internal processes is encouraged as part of this position.

You will work in a multi-disciplinary team with engineers, hydrologists, hydrogeologists, biologists, agrologists and other professionals and should therefore have a broad knowledge background yourself. You have solid project management skills and are an excellent communicator with conflict resolution skills. Your primary contacts are federal, provincial, and local governments, developers, private land owners, farmers, and their respective consultants, and your own coworkers and management. You will conduct and lead mediation, negotiate and resolve disputes and ensure decisions enact best use of the water resources throughout the region.

Job Requirements:
In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education and experienceas outlined below:

  • Master's degree in a resource management or engineering related field (such as geology, geological engineering, geography, hydrology, hydrogeology, environmental studies, etc.) AND a minimum of 3 years of water resource related experience; OR
  • Bachelor's degree in a resource management or engineering related field (such as geology, geological engineering, geography, environmental studies, etc.) AND a minimum of 4 years of water resource related experience.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.


Preferences:
  • Demonstrated experience performing technical duties and working with the Water Act/Water Sustainability Act.
  • Experience in consulting, negotiating and resolving conflicts with stakeholders in water resource management.
  • Experience and/or education in hydrogeology, including field-based experience and experience using hydrogeological principles, concepts, and analytical techniques.
  • Experience working in any of the above in British Columbia


Note: For this position you must be willing to travel to remote areas by vehicle, boat, air or foot, overnight and work in all weather conditions, and you must possess and maintain a valid British Columbia Class 5 driver's license. You also must be willing to work overtime.
