GeoBC is a key organization responsible for the creation, visualization, analysis and application of resource information to support business areas across the natural resource sector and beyond. This portfolio involves the capture, management, distribution and sales of millions of dollars in data and a commitment to reflecting the needs of users across the natural resource sector in the execution and direction of GeoBC's mapping and visualization programs.

As Section Head you will lead a dynamic team of geospatial professionals focused on the development, enhancement and delivery of GeoBC products and service in support of BC Government mandates and priorities. Based on expert knowledge of Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) and broad natural resource business understanding, in this position you will advise senior management and shape strategic geospatial products and service decision making with long term impacts to government policy and services.

This position ensures actions are aligned with major government programs or initiatives. This position maximizes the potential of GIS and related geospatial and information technologies to support the business objectives of government programs, GeoBC, and clients.

Job Requirements:
  • Master's degree or higher in geospatial sciences, geography, geology, forestry or agriculture or a related field (i.e. remote sensing; earth sciences; geographic information systems) with a minimum of five (5) years of *relevant experience in field of GIS; OR
  • Bachelor's degree or diploma in in geospatial sciences, geography, geology, forestry or agriculture or a related field (i.e. remote sensing; earth sciences; geographic information systems) with a minimum of seven (7) years of *relevantexperience in field of GIS; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and *relevant experience may also be considered.


*Relevant experience must include each of the following:
  • Two (2) years of experience developing and managing large projects and attribute data sets and experience with database management tools and applications.
  • Five (5) years of experience developing methodologies and performing custom geo-spatial data modelling and complex analysis and interpretations.
  • Two (2) years of experience supervising multi-disciplinary teams of geospatial professionals.
  • Two (2) years of experience working on multi-disciplinary teams across the natural resource sector.
  • Five (5) years of experience with geospatial data systems projects, such as data warehousing, image analysis, remote sensing and spatial information systems development.


Preference may be given to applicants who have training and/or experience with one (1) or more of the following:
  • Experience with diverse BC Government, Federal, and other available spatial datasets(in particular for B.C.).
  • Preparing and presenting information, analyses and recommendations to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Developing and managing large spatial and attribute data sets throughout the data lifecycle.
  • Contract management.
  • Experience working with First Nation partners.
  • Experience developing partnerships and negotiating agreements with all levels of government and industry leaders to deliver major projects.

About this Position:
There are currently three (3) positions available.
This position can be based in any Water, Land, and Resource Stewardship Ministry office. The locations listed above are to assist applicants in searching for this opportunity and are not a complete list of locations.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to four (4) days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
