British Columbia's Natural Resource Ministries (NRM) are the stewards of the Province's Crown land and natural resources which reflect the diverse values and interests of all British Columbians. The Information, Innovation and Technology (IIT) Division is leading the modernization and transformation of business practices for the NRM through continuous improvement projects, new technology options and operational information management/information technology (IM/IT). The IIT Division is providing leadership for IM/IT planning, policy and business process solutions and is also the single authority for all information and technology across the NRM.

The Radio Communications Technologist reports to the Superintendent, Radio Communications, and provides technical services and analysis to ministry staff within the Natural Resource Sector. The Radio Technologist position plans, installs and upgrades radio, wireless and data communications support services for emergency Wildfire communications and electronic weather data support, coordinates business applications and user technology training, and manages support for the ministries radio systems network to meet its operational mandate in order to maintain year round safety communications for staff and for the general public during emergency situations.

This highly specialized position examines and recommends system requirements; designs radio network configurations; utilizes state of the art test equipment; installs, maintains, trouble shoots and repairs 320 mountain top repeaters sites, 277 remote weather stations, radio communications equipment including VHF, UHF, satellite and broadcast base stations, portable and mobile radios, and various other electronic equipment. The program implements, supports and maintains radio dispatch hardware and software, RoIP (Radio over Internet Protocol) systems and other data systems that are integrated into the radio infrastructure. The program follows policy direction on maintaining a database recording the location and distribution of over $14,000,000.00 worth of provincial assets. This job requires extensive travel in vehicles, helicopter and fixed wing aircraft. It also requires working under adverse weather conditions and long hours during forest fire season.

Job Requirements:

In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education and experience as outlined below:
  • Graduation with a diploma from a recognized 2 year Electronics Engineering Technologist program (This program is accredited at the level of Engineering Technologist by the Applied Science Technologists and Technologists of British Columbia),or equivalent, AND
  • A minimum of 2 years related work experience in the radio, wireless and/or data communication field; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience.
