AbeBooks, an Amazon company, is seeking a talented, self-directed Software Development Manager to lead the team responsible for building and operating our inventory systems. Inventory lies at the core of the AbeBooks marketplace: the performance, accuracy and availability of these systems supports every other aspect of our business.

The successful candidate will manage a team that works at scale, deploys multiple services into the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud, and impacts millions of customers around the world. Someone who can help their team find the right balance between business necessity, invention, and technical and operational excellence.

    •Become a domain expert for your team's products, features and technology.
    •Hire, develop, and motivate a great engineering team.
    •Lead and contribute to the technical vision, strategy, and product roadmap for your team.
    •Recognize and remove technical, organizational and project roadblocks for your team.
    •Propose and implement new features and system improvements.
    •Develop relationships within AbeBooks and Amazon to support your team's activities.
    •Work with your team to continually improve processes and outcomes.
    •Prioritize the work of your team, building product timelines and roadmaps.

Job Details:

Job location: 500-655 Tyee Road, Victoria, BC V9A 6X5

Salary Range: $107,900 - $180,200, commensurate with skills and experience

Basic Qualifications The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

    •6+ years in Software development.
    •4+ years as a Development Manager or Team Lead.
    •BS/MS degree in Computer Science or equivalent.
    •Demonstrated passion for customer experience and usability.
    •Strong verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated technical leadership.
    •Ability to handle multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced, results-driven environment.
    •Understanding of relational databases and no-SQL data storage systems.
    •Working experience with Agile practices and methodologies.
    •An understanding of OO design patterns and programming.

Preferred Qualifications The following qualifications are preferred but not required:

    •Familiarity with Linux or Unix environments.
    •Proficiency with client side technologies and best practices (HTML/JavaScript/CSS, React, Angular, etc.).
    •Experience designing and developing distributed, scalable, fault-tolerant systems.
    •Experience deploying and supporting large-scale systems in AWS.
