The Role

The Software Architect is responsible for defining and executing the technical strategy for the development of BGC software. In collaboration with internal stakeholders, the Architect will be responsible for implementation, management of technical risks and opportunities, project development and our software development processes.  This position can be based at one of our Canadian offices listed above. 

Responsibilities

Application Design:

  • Create prototypes to evaluate new technologies we want to implement or new approaches we want to use to solve our problems
  • Responsible for defining and executing a technical strategy for application development
  • Collaborate with product stakeholders to break down high level requirements into actionable development strategies
  • Ability to evaluate and build solutions with new technologies, and evangelize the resulting approach within the team
  • Performing design and code reviews
  • Ensuring that uniform enterprise-wide application design standards are maintained
  • Identifying the hardware and software that will be needed
  • Architecture valuation and collaboration

Technical Support and Training:

  • Provide solutions in areas of disaster recovery, data integrity, and security
  • Evaluate and recommend software technologies
  • Take a metrics-driven approach to anticipate future technology issues that will affect the health or quality of the team an product
  • Advise and suggest future IT developments to managers
  • Produce documents relating to application architecture, design steps, integration processes and testing procedures relating to each product developed
  • Document installation and maintenance of application software as well as guidelines and standards that should be adhered to for each product

Leadership:

  • Guide the technical leads for professional growth
  • Mentor team members on design and development best practices
  • Act as a role model, coach and mentor to software engineer team members 
  • Leadership through example with the ability to work alongside the team when required
  • Cascading approved plans to designers and developers

Required Education, Experience & Competencies

  • 15+ years of relevant experience leading the technical direction of large-scale engineering teams
  • Technical and Management skills; provide technical leadership, mentoring and professional development to an Engineering team
  • Demonstrated experience with web application development
  • Experience building and running highly scalable web applications
  • Strong analytical, creative, problem-solving and critical thinking skills
  • Polished and effective communication and presentation skills

Position Requirements

Drug & Alcohol Testing

To ensure we meet our client’s compliance requirements and our workplace health and safety commitments, BGC has a drug and alcohol policy that applies to this position.  The policy states that an employee may be required to take a drug and alcohol test prior to engaging in field work. This testing could be requested within an employee’s first week or in the future, as required. It is important to note that some clients also require random drug and alcohol testing and testing in the event of a health and safety accident or incident.

Driver’s License and Passport

In order to perform this role, BGC requires that you have a passport, in the event you are required to travel for work and a valid driver's license, in the event you will be required to drive a vehicle for work. As part of our background screening, BGC will require you to submit a current driver’s abstract upon hire.
