Reporting to the designated Social Work Site Leader and working under the overall direction of the Professional Practice Leader and receiving guidance from the Research, Education and Practice Coordinator, the Social Worker 2, Eating Disorders, provides advanced therapeutic clinical services for patients with complex family assessments, family therapy, individual and group therapy and education for adults who are being assessed or receiving treatment for an eating disorder. The Eating Disorders Program is a comprehensive tertiary service offering outpatient, residential, inpatient and day treatment services to adults and their families throughout the Province of British Columbia. Acts as the lead family therapist in the family based model taking leadership in coordinating care and treatment.
Provides leadership with eating disorders professionals and teams throughout the province to assist with clinical treatment challenges and provide education. Provides leadership within the team and the program and utilizes skills in family therapy with eating disorders to teach internal/external trainees from various disciplines, psychiatric residents and fellows and other interdisciplinary students including social work students. Participates in program development and research activities, makes presents locally, provincially, nationally and internationally at conferences and consults with and provides consultation both to the team and relevant community agencies legislative issues including FIPPA, Health Care Consent Act, treatment refusal, and custody/access issues.
The Social Worker has a central role as a liaison and with education with community agencies and resources such as government agencies, hospitals, eating disorder teams, and community mental health interpreter services and charitable organizations around the province. Knowledge of DSM IV diagnostic criteria for adults with eating disorders and related mental health co-morbid diagnosis.
Knowledge of best practices in eating disorders treatment and evidence based clinical intervention including family therapy, family based treatment and cognitive behavioural therapy methods and their appropriate applications.
Comprehensive knowledge of social work theory, family therapy theory and practice.
Comprehensive knowledge of issues related to eating disorders in adults and the psychosocial impact for patients and families.
Knowledge of relevant legislation affecting adults in mental health includes the Adult Guardianship Act, Health Care Consent Act, Mental Health Act, Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) and Child Family and Community Services Act.
Knowledge of vulnerable adult protection risk factors and legal issues related to reporting.
Demonstrated advanced clinical skills in family assessment, individual, family and group therapy.
Demonstrated program development skills to identify gaps/needs and plan programs/develop services for eating disorder patients and their families.
Demonstrated initiative and self-direction in pursing professional development at an advanced level.

Master's Degree in Social Work plus a minimum of four (4) years experience specifically providing family therapy in a related mental health setting with adults experiencing eating disorders. Post-masters certificate(s) in training model(s) of family therapy. Completion of post-master's professional development workshops in areas of clinical intervention that may include at least two of the following: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Motivational Enhancement Therapy and Group Therapy. Family Systems therapy, Solution focused therapy, and Imago Couples therapy.
Eligible for registration with the British Columbia Board of Registration for Social Workers.
In the role of lead family therapist in a family based model, provides intense family therapy to patients and families in the ITS (intense treatment service), inpatient, day treatment and outpatient program, and coordinates treatment within the team.
Provides advanced level family assessments relevant to adults with eating disorders and family dynamics which forms the basis for family therapy, and provides recommendations on treatment planning to team and family. Provides family treatment throughout the province using teleconferencing technology.
Provides in person as well as through conference calls, videoconferencing consultation to eating disorders therapists around the province on complex cases and therapeutic challenges.
Provides individual and group therapy with the context of the ITS, day treatment and outpatient program which includes co-facilitating therapy groups such as Art Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy Groups, meal support therapy, and multi-family groups. Provides counselling and psycho-education to families and other relevant caregivers through parent support groups to understand the nature, treatment and prognosis of the eating disorder and to assist families with coping. Utilizes skills in teleconferencing to provide patient/family support.
Establishes and maintains effective collaborative and constructive liaison relationships with community mental health providers, Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD), social workers, academic institutions, hospitals and other agencies, in order to coordinate services across the continuum of eating disorders services.
Evaluates and develops treatment practices, guidelines and protocols within the team to promote excellence in social work practice and eating disorders treatment protocols.
