In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position. Reporting to the Medical Director, Public Health Response (PHR), the Senior Practice Leader is a leader, innovator, knowledge translator and change agent who is accountable for promoting excellence in nursing practice and quality of patient care. The scope of practice of the Senior Practice Leader (SPL) is both broad and complex encompassing program coordination, consultation, education, dissemination of research and administration across the Health Authorities and the province. The incumbent possesses expertise in advanced communication, leadership and expert problem solving skills. The SPL advances knowledge creation and uptake by engaging in or supporting the use of current research, evidence/best practice standards in order to address professional, program and concerns. The SPL PHR is an advanced practitioner who works as an independent specialist and as part of multi-disciplinary teams responsible for responding to urgent and emergent public health issues, including communicable disease, climate change, harm reduction, substance use, and overdose prevention, and other critical events. Across these areas of public health, the SPL will lead the development of public health guidelines and policies, participate in provincial communicable disease surveillance and investigation, act as a consultant, create and implement education and training, and participate in other duties as needed.

What you'll do

  • Act as a resource and consultant for local, provincial and national planning in the area of urgent and emergent public health issues at the program, organizational, provincial, national and international levels.
  • Participate in the development, implementation and evaluation of provincial guidelines and standards of practices for the delivery of urgent and emergent public health issues control programs in collaboration with the Medical Director, other members of the team and stakeholders.
  • Promote evidenced-based practice and share knowledge about current research and literature including innovation in practice as it relates to urgent and emergent public health issues. Establish opportunities to support staff in implementing evidence based practice. Conduct applied research. Promote and advance best practice through publications, presentations, and conferences.
  • Provide leadership and expert clinical consultation to public health practitioners. Lead and support knowledge translation and communication of best practices and successful programming for urgent and emergent public health issues.
  • Provide leadership for the provincial implementation and evaluation of new and expanded Public Health Response programs including harm reduction, communicable disease and other emergent public health responses.

What you bring


  • A level of education, training and experience equivalent to a Masters Degree in Nursing, or related field and a minimum of five (5) years of recent, related clinical experience in immunization and public health nursing in progressively senior leadership positions or advanced practice roles including experience in drafting guidelines and standards of practice. Eligible for registration with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM)British Columbia College of Nursing Professionals (BCCNP).

  • Awareness of and commitment to learning and understanding the Truth & Reconciliation Commission's 94 Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight Report (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), and Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls calls for justice, and how they intersect across the health care system.
  • Supports team members on their learning journey, ensuring education strategy for team/department to implement Indigenous Cultural Safety at a practical level.
  • Works collaboratively with appropriate Indigenous teams/departments to ensure ICS lens applied holistically.
  • Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).
  • As a strong asset for consideration, we are looking for our successful candidate to have: Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities impacting indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.).

Job Type: Regular Full-Time
Salary Range: $96,429 - $138,617 /year. The starting salary for this position would be determined with consideration of the successful candidate's relevant education and experience, and would be in alignment with the provincial compensation reference plan. Salary will be prorated accordingly for part time roles.
