The Role

BGC is seeking a Senior Geochemist or Hydrogeochemist with a background in water quality, metal leaching, and acid rock drainage (ML/ARD) theory and practice. The successful candidate will join our small, growing team of geochemistry specialists, and will work closely with project managers, engineers, and geoscientists across BGC. The ideal candidate will provide technical leadership and mentorship as we continue to grow our team and advance our state of practice to solve client challenges.

This position can be based at one of our Canadian locations listed above.


  • Act as technical lead and/or technical reviewer on project scope design and interpretation for metal leaching and acid rock drainage (ML/ARD), water quality, and source term development and predictive modeling projects
  • Manage projects, including proposals, budgets, schedules, staffing and scopes
  • Manage multi-disciplinary teams, potentially working in remote and challenging environments
  • Supervise, train, and mentor junior and intermediate staff in the field and office
  • Participate in business development and identify new opportunities, promoting BGCs capacity for undertaking innovative and advanced hydrogeological projects and proposal writing
  • Present results to internal and external groups
  • Some travel to project locations in North and South America and beyond will be required to support junior team members, gain familiarity of project sites, and serve our clients
  • Integrate with hydrogeology and hydrology teams on coupled water balance and water quality modelling projects

Required Education, Experience and Competencies

  • 10 - 15 years of consulting experience and technical leadership
  • Post Graduate education in chemistry, geology, hydrogeology, geological engineering or related discipline
  • Registered professional, P.Geo or P.Eng with EGBC or similar association
  • Understanding of low temperature geochemistry, ML/ARD theory and practice
  • Experience with laboratory reporting of geochemical test work and interpretation of results
  • Experience in water quality modelling and prediction
  • Exposure to geochemical modelling and database management programs, such as PHREEQC, Geochemists Workbench, EQWIN, EquIS and GoldSim
  • Past project work loads should include the range of mine life, from pre-feasibility through operations and closure/remediation
  • Proficient in technical writing
  • Ability to present, prepare and review reports
  • Strong leadership and project management skills
  • Ability to communicate with clients and appreciate their project goals
  • Self-starter with a keen desire to contribute to technical excellence in a “One Team” environment

Position Requirements

Drug & Alcohol Testing

To ensure we meet our client’s compliance requirements and our workplace health and safety commitments, BGC has a drug and alcohol policy that applies to this position.  The policy states that an employee may be required to take a drug and alcohol test prior to engaging in field work. This testing could be requested within an employee’s first week or in the future, as required. It is important to note that some clients also require random drug and alcohol testing and testing in the event of a health and safety accident or incident.

Driver’s License and Passport

In order to perform this role, BGC requires that you have a passport, in the event you are required to travel for work and a valid driver's license, in the event you will be required to drive a vehicle for work. As part of our background screening, BGC will require you to submit a current driver’s abstract upon hire.
