An Opportunity to Make an Impact

Legal Aid BC currently has an opportunity for an experienced Senior Financial Accountant to join our team in our downtown Vancouver office on a full-time basis. There is the flexibility to work from home during the current pandemic if that is required. This role will see you working to drive efficiencies and improve how we operate with a focus on helping our organization continue to achieve its mission and help people who need our services. 

Reporting to the Manager of Finance & Administration, as our new Senior Financial Accountant you'll be responsible for leading and overseeing LABC's financial processes including accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets, and general accounting. This pivotal position will see you managing and supervising the operations and performance management of a team of 3 staff members, as well as contractors, while also providing advice and assistance to divisional Vice Presidents and Managers on accounting and budgetary matters, budget preparation, and the preparation of financial reports. This role may also act for the Manager of Finance & Administration as required.  

While no two days will be alike in this exciting and strategic role, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Managing day-to-day financial operations including invoicing, accounts payable and receivable, bank reconciliations, month-end schedules and working papers, cash forecasts for investment purposes, maintenance of journals and ledgers, and all general accounting functions. 
  • Providing advice and assistance on accounting methods, procedures, budgets and internal controls. 
  • Assisting in the preparation of budgets, reviewing specific submissions and coordinating data, and reviewing operating and capital expenditures against approved budgets before reporting variances and subsequently working with the Vice Presidents and Managers in explaining variances. 
  • Hiring, training, scheduling, supervising, and evaluating staff as well as providing leadership to your team by establishing staff goals, objectives, and training and development plans. 
  • Coordinating and delegating work projects to the team while also acting for the Division in processing grievances by applying the collective agreement as well as authorizing overtime, vacation, salary reviews, and job classifications. 
  • Supervising and negotiating contracts with consultants as required by monitoring and approving work and approving invoices for payment. 
  • Assisting in the year-end audit with external auditors by ensuring the completion of year-end working papers, financial statements, and associated notes. 
  • Directing the establishment and maintenance of LABC's internal control systems by ensuring the reliability and accuracy of financial information and that financial transactions comply with Government and LABC's policy.
  • Establishing and maintaining appropriate internal checks and controls in order to ensure information accuracy and the safeguarding of LABC assets. 
  • Serving as the Sage 500 system specialist for the accounting system and report writing while also maintaining access security for the general ledger system by maintaining the general ledger account as well as cost centre structure and report coding, reviewing journal entries for correctness, and ensuring proper approval and posting.
  • Preparing cash flow forecasts and making recommendations on investments. 
  • Developing and recommending budgets and resource forecasts in order to achieve department objectives, approve purchases, and monitor expenditures within approved budgets. 
  • Directing the establishment and maintenance of the fixed asset module and retaining responsibility for fixed asset accounts and reporting, as well as maintaining benefits recalculation processes for month-end reporting, and preparing LABC's charitable tax return and GST return. 
  • Liaising with Human Resources on payroll and shared HRIS/payroll system issues by reviewing payroll system-generated journals, approvals, and postings in order to ensure smooth payroll operations. 
  • Maintaining current awareness of developments in financial and information systems as well as LABC management in order to identify new approaches for implementation. 
More About You

In order to qualify for this role, you will need a minimum of 5 years of experience in accounting, financial planning, budget development, and preparing draft financial statements along with a CPA designation. Previous leadership experience is a plus as is previous experience working within or with a crown, non-profit, or government organization. Previous experience with Sage 500 or a similar system is an asset.   

As our ideal candidate for this role, you'll have considerable knowledge of accounting principles and practices relative to financial controls, internal auditing, and budgeting. You'll also join us with considerable knowledge of automated financial systems applications, functions, and operations. Your excellent interpersonal skills will combine with your accounting expertise and aptitude for stakeholder management as you work to improve our internal controls and processes in order to achieve financial excellence. Your strong problem-solving skills and your successful leadership will ensure you foster an environment where employees are motivated and continuously able to do their best as they contribute towards the mission of Legal Aid BC.
