 Job Title:  Senior Fiber Splicer Technician

Fiber Splicer Technicians are responsible for installation/management of structured cabling, coaxial cabling, wireless access points, network hardware, telephony systems, inside and outside plant fiber optic splicing, terminating, and testing.

Responsibilities:

  • Splice and test fiber optic cables in all outside plant applications – aerial, burial and underground, on both newly placed and existing cables.
  • Able to complete arrangements on existing and new applications, buried, aerial and building cables.
  • Able to use the EXFO FTB-1 PRO (OTDR), OLTS, and Power Meters to test, analyze, and troubleshoot fiber networks.
  • Copper, CAT5 and CAT6 cabling experience.
  •  Able to populate racks, switch’s, wireless access points.
  • Able to use FLUKE test gear.
  • Experience in field quality work and specifications.
  • Build fiber optic splice closures (FOSCs), prep, and splice OSP fiber cables into various FOSCs
  • Dress and mount aerial FOSCs and cables. This may involve using a bucket truck, ladder, or climbing telecommunication poles with spurs. Working heights range from 15-40ft.
  • Dress and rack FOSCs and cables in pedestals, service boxes, vaults, and manholes.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings and blueprints and update based on progress, changes, field findings.
  • Safely drive and maneuver vehicles into tight spaces and easements.
  • Analyze test results and have the ability to troubleshoot and correct any faults or defects.
  • Interpret and understand placing and splicing work plans.
  • Read and interpret work plans or job specifications to execute all work assigned safely and in accordance with the Company Health and Safety policy.
  • Work outdoors in various conditions to place copper or fiber optic telecommunication cables.
  • Climb poles, ladders, and a variety of construction equipment to assist in the installation of telecommunication cables and apparatuses and work at heights up to and exceeding 30 feet.
  • Clean and maintain tools and equipment.
  • Accurately record and report project progress to the appropriate supervisory person and communicate any issues or expected delays.

 Experience and Training

  • Minimum of 3 - 5 years related experience.
  • Maintain a safe work environment by following company policies/procedures and adhering to all Federal and Provincial safety standards
  • Valid Safety Certifications are preferred (Aerial Lift and Fall Protection, Confined Space, H2S Alive, First Aid/CPR)
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License (Class 5) with clean abstract
  • Possess effective communication skills; both verbal and written.
  • Must pass Criminal Background Check and Drug & Alcohol Testing
  • Strong interpersonal and listening skills with the ability to work independently or in a team.
  • Demonstrated commitment to health and safety and willing to receive applicable Health and Safety training as per legislative and job requirements.
  • Physically able to perform job aspects in all weather conditions. (Climb ladders, medium to heavy lifting up to 50 lbs.).
  • Comfortable working inside confined spaces such as telecom manhole and service vaults.
  • Bucket Truck knowledge and experience would be an asset.
  • Proof of Safety training and certifications.

Working Conditions:

  • Walking, standing, bending, crouching, or stooping.
  • Frequently lifting 5 to 50 pounds, occasionally heavier lifting.
  • Availability for evening, weekend, and holiday hours as required with ability to work out of town on short notice.
  • Work outdoors and indoors; occasionally in inclement weather.
