ERMis seeking a Senior Consultant to join our Canadian team, with a focus onIndigenous engagement and consultation, Indigenous knowledge and land use studies. The Senior Consultant will provide technical leadership with regard to engagement and consultation programs, Indigenous knowledge and land use studies, and the integration of Indigenous knowledge into environmental assessments to satisfy Canadian provincial, territorial and federal regulations.

The successful candidate will have a proven record of developing and implementing Indigenous engagement and consultation, collaboration with Indigenous communities, and experience with the collection, interpretation and integration of Indigenous knowledge into project applications. The successful candidate will also be versed in the rapidly evolving legal, regulatory and social context of the subject in order to deliver sustainable and responsible results.

This is a full-time, permanent position, preferably based in BC, Alberta or Ontario.

Subject Matter Responsibilities :
  • Lead a variety of scopes related to Indigenous engagement, consultation and Indigenous knowledge and land use studies including planning, strategy, program development, implementation, management and reporting.
  • Conduct Indigenous knowledge and land use studies, including interviews, workshops and field studies, to satisfy relevant regulations .
  • Support, contribute to, and interpret Indigenous knowledge and land use studies prepared by communities or other consultancies to satisfy relevant regulations.
  • Provide strategic and risk management advice to clients and internal managers regarding sensitive and evolving topics (including Indigenous agreements and negotiations, Free Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC), reconciliation, etc.), supported by background research and professional experience.
  • Ensure the completion of substantive and accurate regulatory filing documentation in compliance with Federal, Provincial and Territorial regulatory requirements.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous cultural, historical and political context in Canada, with an emphasis on BC, Alberta and Ontario.
  • Understanding of related requirements regarding Environmental Impact Assessments, Crown's duty to Consult and Accommodate, Indigenous Knowledge and land use studies.

Business Responsibilities
  • Contribute to proposal development, including development of technical scopes and cost estimates in accordance with ERM's policies and processes.
  • Maintain and build client relationships to support new and repeat business.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level consultants to develop their related technical skills, project experience, and decision-making skills.
  • Comply with ERM's operational policies and protocols.

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in a relevant discipline (Indigenous Studies, anthropology, archaeology, sociology, geography and/or environmental sciences).
  • Knowledge of Canadian federal and provincial/territorial legislation regarding consultation, Indigenous engagement, Indigenous land use assessments, environmental assessment, and permitting.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience related to Indigenous engagement and consultation, Indigenous knowledge and land use studies.
  • Strong commitment to safety, including following established health and safety protocols.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including technical writing skills, with a superior attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record.
  • Willing and able to travel domestically and internationally, if required.
