Job Description

Vancouver Island University is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Culinary Arts Instructor to join our dynamic instructional team. In this role, you will teach both the theoretical knowledge and hands-on skills essential for students to succeed in the culinary industry. You’ll contribute to curriculum development, recipe creation, and food production while ensuring high standards of food costing, quality control, and instructional delivery are maintained.

As an active member of the Culinary Arts program, you’ll support student success both inside and outside the classroom, participate in departmental initiatives, and collaborate with faculty and staff to meet program goals. This position offers the opportunity to share your culinary expertise while helping to shape the next generation of chefs.

Duties:

  • Teach all aspects of theory and practical skills required for program completion and future employment in the industry.
  • Participate as a member of the instructional team to ensure all competencies of the Culinary Arts curriculum are achieved.
  • Review and revise curriculum as required and develop new materials and recipes when appropriate.
  • Participate in all aspects of food production and assist in the ongoing evaluation of food costing, quality control and instructional delivery.
  • Completes general updates on the administrative area, faculty or department website (e.g., biographies, announcements, important dates, course information), ensuring information is current and accurate.

Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning, and student success. Successful candidates will participate in activities outside the classroom including student support and department committees.

Required Qualifications:

Red Seal Trade Qualification. Extensive experience in first-class establishments with a minimum 10 years working in a range of cooking experiences. Provincial Instructor Diploma or equivalent (if not complete will be given a maximum of two years to complete).

  • Ability and willingness to work as part of a team comprised of instructors, administrators, and support staff.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with demonstrated computer literacy required.
  • A high level of energy and enthusiasm is essential.
  • Demonstrated experience with new and innovative approaches in cooking.
  • Sensitivity to the needs of a wide variety of adult students returning to education.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Teaching in a post-secondary setting.
  • Membership in a Chef's Association.
Starting Salary: 
Faculty are placed on the BCGEU salary scale based on education, experience and placement criteria as outlined in the Collective Agreement, to an initial maximum of $89,412 per annum
