Specialty Education, Registered Nurse (rn), Intensive Care

Position Summary

We are seeking a motivated Registered Nurse with a dedication for delivering compassionate patient care to join our team in the Intensive Care department at University Hospital of Northern BC.

Reporting to the Manager, Critical Care, the staff nurse is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating patient care and nursing practice activities within the frame work of quality management and in accordance with the University Hospital of Northern British Columbia mission statement. The role is defined by the needs of the Hospital, a select patient/family population, agency expectations and the goals for professional nursing practice.

BCIT Critical Care (Bridging) Nursing Specialty Program Details:

• There are 6 training positions available for 2023/2024
• Applicants must have either a BCIT HAU or ER Specialty Nursing Certificate in order to be eligible for this training
• Northern Health provides placement support and funding for tuition, textbooks, and travel expenses for clinical placements, as required
• Successful candidates may be required complete pre-requisite courses through part-time distance education, on their own time, prior to assuming this position
• Learners should expect to make a 3-5 month commitment for this education, which includes online and in-person learning
• Additional study time, outside of scheduled hours, may be required to successfully complete the program
• Flexibility for practicums is necessary
• Applicants must successfully complete the education program prior to working in the department
• Upon successful completion of the education program, Northern Health requires an eighteen (18) month return of service in a regular position in the area of nursing applicable to the education program.
• Qualified applicants will be considered first for specialty positions. If there are no qualified applicants, training lines will be awarded to unqualified applicants and training will be provided

The Essentials of Critical Care Orientation (ECCO) which is an accredited program through the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) will be replacing the in-house critical care program previously offered at UHNBC for the September 2023 intake. This program has been utilized by Interior Health for the last decade and contains resources which guide Canadian nurses towards successful critical care certification. ECCO runs for 7 weeks with online theory modules, in-class labs/instruction and clinical shifts. Upon completion learners will have 16 consolidation shifts (12hrs) to prepare for fully independent practice in the ICU once completed.

Shift Rotation/Hours of work: Monday to Friday, Days, 08:00 to 16:00

University Hospital of Northern BC (UHNBC) is the largest acute care facility (268 beds) in Northern Health and is the hub for specialized health services. It is a full service hospital and home to a new cancer centre for Northern BC, including a wide range of cancer treatments. Provides undergraduate physician training through the Northern Medical Program, run by the University of British Columbia and University of Northern British Columbia. Qualfications
•Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN registrant.
