Position Summary

Do you have a passion for nursing? We have the position for you! We are seeking a motivated Registered Nurse with a dedication for delivering compassionate patient care to join our team at Bulkley Valley District Hospital.
Reports to Director of Care and is guided by the Visions and Values of Northern Health, BCCNM Standards of Practice and Codes of Ethics. Identifies, plans, implements and evaluates nursing care required to assist patients in meeting their physical, social and psychological needs in accordance with established NH and BVDH policies and procedures. Practices as a member of the nursing team.
Northern Health In-House Emergency Training Program Details Regional Emergency Department Education Program (REDEP) The Northern Health Regional Emergency Department Education Program (REDEP) utilizes a standardized, evidence informed on-line curriculum offered by Elsevier, called Emergency Nursing Orientation (ENO). REDEP combines Elsevier's ENO online curriculum with a skills/simulation lab and clinical practicum to prepare registered nurses to provide safe and competent emergency nursing care, at a novice level. Preparation will be accomplished by:
• Introducing the basic topics, concepts, and practice guidelines that are fundamental to emergency nursing.
• Developing the specialized skills, knowledge, attitudes, and judgement required to provide safe, competent, and individualized care to the emergency patient.
• Promoting professionalism in emergency nursing.
• There are 2 training positions available for 2024/2025
• Northern Health provides placement support and funding for tuition, textbooks, and travel expenses for clinical placements, as required
• Successful candidates may be required complete pre-requisite courses through part-time distance education, on their own time, prior to assuming this position
• Learners should expect to make a 4 month commitment for this education, which includes online and in-person learning
• Additional study time, outside of scheduled hours, may be required to successfully complete the program
• Flexibility for practicums is necessary
• Prior experience on an acute care ward (i.e. medical/surgical) preferred
• Current BLS certification within a year is mandatory prior to the skills/simulation
• Preference for participants who have completed an electrocardiogram (ECG) course prior to beginning REDEP. (If needed participants can complete an Elsevier ECG module during theory)
• Applicants must successfully complete the education program prior to working in the department
• Upon successful completion of the education program, Northern Health requires an eighteen (18) month return of service in a regular position in the area of nursing applicable to the education program.
• Qualified applicants will be considered first for specialty positions. If there are no qualified applicants, training lines will be awarded to unqualified applicants and training will be provided. Please indicate the site you are applying for on your cover letter.

Smithers Smithers is located in the picturesque Bulkley Valley surrounded by three mountain ranges which provide a backdrop for the town's Alpine setting. The main industries include forestry, tourism, transportation and agriculture. Smithers offers affordable housing and natural splendor that support a balanced lifestyle. The population of Smithers is approximately 6,000, with an additional 5,000 from the surrounding communities that access services. Qualfications
• Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN registrant.
• Post-graduate certification in Emergency Nursing or Critical Care Nursing or a minimum of one (1) years' recent related experience in an Emergency or ICU setting or an equivalent combination of training and experience is preferred.
• Current CPR - Basic Rescuer level required.
• Current ACLS certification preferred.
• All Specially Trained Nursing Skills (STN) related to the unit of employment must be completed within six (6) months of employment.
Skills and Abilities:
• Ability to manage all equipment appropriate for the provision of care for patients admitted to the acute care unit.
• Ability to deal with emergency situations, patients and families.
• Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
• Ability to provide direction to nursing and non-professional nursing staff.
• Ability to communicate effectively; both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to work well independently with minimal supervision.
• Ability to assist in orientation of new personnel.
• Ability to deal effectively with a variety of internal and external contacts; including coworkers, physicians, community agency representatives, patients and families.
• Ability to operate related equipment.
