Ballard's Quality Team has a position available for a Quality Technologist (QT) in our Burnaby facility, reporting to the Quality Control (QC) Team Lead. This senior technical position requires strong administrative skills, including assisting the team lead with day-to-day issues that arise in the QC department when necessary. The QT will also assist with the development of appropriate incoming inspection control plans and effective inspection techniques. It involves direct interaction with Supplier Quality Engineers (SQEs), design engineering, and management. The successful candidate must be a certified CMM technologist or have equivalent knowledge and experience.

The Quality Technologist will perform and analyze the results of tests and inspections of incoming (buy) and "work-in-progress (WIP)" (make) material, including first article, and help determine the disposition of non-conforming material. When non-conforming material is identified, the Quality Technologist ensures the timely disposition of material and works with part engineers and the Quality team to effectively contain the problem at Ballard.


  • Programs and performs CMM and ROI measurements (also VMM if possible). Ensures consistent application of inspections and tests in IQC
  • Reviews and analyzes the results of inspection tests and helps to determine the outcome of products that are not accepted
  • Participates in the development, improvement, changes, and initiation of techniques for inspection and testing, as well as evaluation of incoming materials
  • Organizes and maintains final and shipping quality evaluation records and files
  • Performs internal quality audits on products, processes, and systems
  • Supports "fitness for use" activities
  • Collects data, prepares reports, and participates in the development of database for post sales services
  • Supports continuous improvement activities in work teams
  • Initiates certification documentation for products

  • Certified CMM technologist or equivalent
  • Undergraduate degree or technology diploma in science, engineering, or technology is preferred
  • Three to five years relevant experience, or equivalent combination, including two or more years of experience as CMM technologist and quality inspector
  • General quality background knowledge is required, including basic understanding of measurement techniques, measurement systems analysis, inspection sampling plans, and quality tools
  • Understanding of statistics as they apply to quality
  • Strong knowledge of GD&T is preferred
  • Must be able to quickly learn about and understand the technical issues and processes related to the quality issues
  • Basic understanding of supply chain and operations
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Clarity is required in all communications when explaining complex concepts to all levels of personnel. Must be easy to work with (co-operative team player), yet able to work independently when required
  • Strong record keeping and organizational skills
  • Must be able to manage multiple issues simultaneously
  • Must be able to work under pressure on timelines and act with a sense of urgency
  • Knowledge of APQP concepts is preferred
  • Knowledge of PEM fuel cells is an asset
