General Fusion is transforming how the world is energized by developing the first commercially-viable fusion power plant. Fusion will deliver clean, safe and on-demand power at industrial scale, providing a powerful complement to renewables and a pathway to a zero-emission grid.

Combining new technologies, proven industrial processes, and advances in fundamental fusion science, General Fusion aims to be the first in the world to develop commercial fusion power. Key performance requirements have been demonstrated at the system level, setting the stage for building a pre-commercial fusion power prototype.


Position Overview:

As a member of the Plasma Injector Systems team, the Plasma Injector Protection System Lead Engineer will lead the design and development of large high speed mechanical systems and high-pressure liquid metal systems directly for and in support of General Fusion’s Fusion Demonstration Plant. This work will focus on mechanical and fluid dynamics design of large high-speed components and high-pressure fluid flows.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Interfacing with internal stakeholders to help develop system requirements
  • Identifying areas of design risk and recommend mitigation strategies
  • Working with other system owners to make trade-offs that are best for the program
  • Identifying external resources for design support and developing design specifications for them to work with.
  • Mechanical design
  • Reviewing the design work from internal and external sources
  • Advising and mentoring junior design staff
  • Identifying aspects of the design that can be accomplished with conventional designs and off-the-shelf components
  • Interfacing with suppliers and partners to identify suitable parts & fabrication processes
  • Creating tests to verify that designed elements satisfy their requirements; ensure the elements include features necessary to conduct these tests

Relevant Skills and Experience:


  • 15+ years’ experience in mechanical design.
  • Extensive experience in the designing, building and commissioning of custom mechanical systems
  • Mechanical aptitude and a willingness to work hands-on with the components of the design
  • Flexibility to adapt to a rapidly changing work environment
  • Experience with integrated multidisciplined designs
  • Experience delivering designs that are proven to meet a formal set of requirements


  • Experience in complex static and dynamic (impulse) stress analysis, using both analytical and finite element methods
  • Experience with the design of high-pressure fluid systems
  • Experience with the certification of high-pressure components
  • Experience with the design of large rotating equipment
  • Experience with the design of high vacuum components
  • Experience in the design and development of large scale one of a kind prototypes
  • Experience designing systems to manage impulse loads
  • Experience designing for large thermal gradients
  • Experience with liquid metals

The work involved in this project combines a wide range of skill sets, and each team member will need to become familiar with the full scope of the plasma development and understand how their work relates to the whole. General Fusion seeks individuals who are self-motivated, have good communication skills and are comfortable with creative problem solving independently and within a group.



Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Physics (with mechanical specialization) is a minimum requirement.
