BC Children's Hospital Department of Psychiatry is seeking a physician with experience working with youth and with risky substance use and substance use disorders to work on a newly developed site wide substance use consultation service at BC Children's and Women's Hospitals (BCWH).
The Substance Use Guidance, Assessment and Referral (SUGAR) Program is a site-wide transdisciplinary substance use consultation service that will provide specialty care to individuals who use drugs and alcohol at BC Children's and Women's Hospital.
As a consulting physician, you will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team assessing and treating substance use presentations including management of intoxication, withdrawal and concurrent disorders for patients admitted to BC Children's and BC Women's Hospital. Physicians will provide substance use and mental health assessments and trauma informed care. In the Consulting Physician role you will work with the primary medical team and the SUGAR team to implement treatment plans and provide evidence based care in hospital to reduce risk of patient initiated discharges, and to help support community referrals. Providing support to the medical teams and emergency staff will also be an important role. The work is primarily clinical and is remunerated by a service contract. Previous experience in the assessment and treatment of children, youth and pregnant people with substance use and OAT prescribing is desirable. BC Children's Hospital Department of Psychiatry is an active teaching program and supervision of medical students, pediatric and psychiatry residents, and adolescent medicine fellows is expected.
As the successful candidate for this position, you will have demonstrated a commitment to academic and clinical excellence as well as patient and family centered care. You will have passed or be eligible for membership with Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) or the Canadian College of Family Physicians (CCFP) and the College of Physician and Surgeons of British Columbia (CPSBC). The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to work successfully in a multidisciplinary team environment and will demonstrate a trauma informed approach in their clinical work and professional relationships.
