The Squamish Nation is comprised of descendants of the Coast Salish Aboriginal people who live in the present day Greater Vancouver area, Gibson’s landing, and Squamish River watershed. The Squamish Nation has occupied and governed the territory since beyond recorded history. 


We have a great opportunity for an experienced Payroll Coordinator/Officer to join our dynamic and progressive First Nations government in North Vancouver for a one to two year contract position.

Reporting to the Payroll Team Leader, this role involves assisting in processing a 400+ person, bi-weekly, computerized payroll and performing work tasks of a complex nature according to established policies and procedures. 


To be successful in this role, you will have a certificate in Accounting, Payroll/Financial Management, or a related discipline from a recognized post-secondary institution and previous payroll experience (mandatory). You will also have a minimum of one (1) year of experience with computerized payroll administration, reconciliation of accounts, general accounting, tracking of numbers on spreadsheets, and processing income assistance payments etc. 

In addition, the ideal candidate will also have:  

  • A Canadian Payroll Certificate or the willingness to obtain this (a combination of relevant education and work experience may be considered)
  • An intermediate level of experience with Internet and Microsoft Office Applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc)
  • Demonstrated experience with a large scale computerized accounting system (experience with JD Edwards is an asset)
  • Previous experience working in a First Nations community, particularly Squamish (preferred)
  • A valid BC Driver’s Licence Class 4 or 5 (Class 7N may be considered)
  • A reliable vehicle and current auto insurance
  • The ability to provide a valid Criminal Records Check

Please note that the completion of Grade 12 plus a minimum of four (4) years experience may substitute for above education and experience.

As your career with Squamish Nation progresses, you will also be required to successfully complete job-required, short-term upgrading, training and courses relating to payroll processing, terminations, etc.
