Optical Engineers at Photonic model, develop, and optimize optical hardware and characterization systems for our optical quantum processor, playing a key role in our many design flows. You will navigate the complexity of integrating the latest optics technology into our systems. You will be an expert in the design and realization of optical systems, comfortable working in a diverse, multi-disciplinary team of engineers, quantum physicists, software designers, and scientists.

 

What we need you to do:

  • Develop low-loss high-performance optical components that meet the stringent requirements of quantum photonics
  • Perform FDTD or Tracing simulations as needed to create next-generation optical devices
  • Develop optical test procedures and help setting up the required lab
  • Source required components and work with relevant vendors
  • Troubleshoot the setups and systems and do root cause failure analysis
  • Direct and conduct experiments as needed to support design efforts
  • Evaluate designs with numerical simulations and comparison with test data
  • Work on issues of integrating optics with other sub-systems
  • Document the results and present them to cross-functional teams
  • Oversee and develop required manufacturing processes

 

What you bring to our team:

  • Master’s or PhD degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or Engineering Physics (with a specialization in Optics, Quantum Mechanics or Photonics)
  • 7 years of hands-on industrial experience or an equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • Knowledge of optical design software
  • Proficient in optics and electro-optics lab setups and environments
  • Experience with optical system test and measurements techniques
  • Knowledge of materials for optical systems
  • Outstanding teamwork skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Experience with CAD tools like Zemax and Solidworks
  • Experience with coding languages (e.g., MATLAB and Python)
  • Experience troubleshooting complex experimental setups.
  • Experience with vacuum or cryogenic systems
  • Experience working in a start-up environment

Exceptional candidates will have one or more of:

Bonus

Photonic is designing the world’s first quantum processor in silicon. It would be awesome if you had some familiarity with quantum physics, mathematics, and programming, but we will ensure that team members will have the opportunity to learn about quantum computing as we grow.
