Job Description
Are you passionate about protecting workers and strengthening occupational health and safety across British Columbia? The Occupational Compliance Officer (OCO) plays a critical role in advancing WorkSafeBC's prevention mandate by ensuring compliance with the Workers' Compensation Act and Occupational Health and Safety Regulation. This position is ideal for professionals who are motivated by public safety, regulatory integrity, and meaningful impact through evidence-based enforcement and prevention activities.
In this role, you'll conduct risk-based inspections and apply enforcement authority where serious or imminent hazards exist, and make fair, well-reasoned compliance decisions grounded in legislation, policy, and evidence. Working closely with Prevention Field Services officers, advisors, and cross-functional partners, you'll support sustained compliance efforts, contribute to risk reduction strategies, and help inform policy, program, and industry-wide safety improvements.

In this role, you'll work primarily in the field or community and remotely, based on the operational needs of the position. There may also be occasions when you are asked to come to the office, such as for training and orientation.

- Conduct planned, risk-based inspections to assess compliance with occupational health and safety legislation and regulation.
- Apply enforcement authority, including issuing orders, penalties, and immediate work stoppages where serious or imminent danger exists.
- Collect, analyze, and weigh evidence to make fair, timely, and defensible compliance and enforcement decisions.
- Prepare clear, detailed reports and well-reasoned written decisions that support enforcement actions and withstand scrutiny.
- Collaborate with prevention partners, advisors, and internal teams to support sustained compliance, risk reduction strategies, and industry-wide safety improvements.
- Consistently model the appropriate level of organizational behaviours expected of all WorkSafeBC employees: responsive, respectful, fair, collaborative, accountable, and forward thinking.
- Are comfortable undertaking enforcement responsibilities while maintaining professionalism and fairness.
- Have strong knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation, regulatory frameworks, and compliance methodologies.
- Are confident making independent, evidence-based decisions in complex or high-risk environments.
- Can communicate clearly and persuasively both verbally and in writing, particularly when explaining regulatory decisions or enforcement outcomes.
- Are motivated by public service, prevention, and by contributing to safer workplaces through accountability and enforcement.
- A diploma in Health & Safety or related field
- A minimum * of *3 years of relevant Health & Safety and working experience
