BC Children Hospital has two new opportunities for Nurse Practitioners to join our Ortho-Spine Surgery team. This is an advanced Nurse Practitioner role focused on providing medical management and care coordination to the spine surgery pediatric patients in collaboration with the attending spine surgeons and interprofessional team. The role includes responsibility for diagnosis and comprehensive management of the ortho-spine surgical pediatric patients. The Nurse Practitioner roles for the Ortho-Spine Surgery Program are essential to provide an inter-professional approach to care for patient and families and to support the Ortho Spine Surgical team. The NP will work with the ortho-spine surgery team to provide comprehensive medical management and children including diagnosing, developing treatment plans and initiating therapy. The Ortho-Spine Surgery Nurse Practitioner will provide professional guidance to other health professionals and participate autonomously and collaboratively as a members of the ortho-spine surgery team to ensure the best care of the pediatric patients and support to their families.

About the Ortho Spine Surgery Department:

The BCCH Pediatric Spine program provides exceptional care to all ages of pediatric patients with a wide range of medical and surgical complexity. The vast majority of patients are treated for spinal deformity. The program has pioneered a number of innovative surgical strategies that are not yet offered in many other Canadian centers including complex spinal osteotomies and vertebral body tethering. The team provides continuous province-wide Level 1 on-call coverage of pediatric spine trauma, benign and malignant spinal neoplastic care, and assesses an abundance of outpatient referrals for back pain.

The Pediatric Spine program at BCCH is the provincial referral center for all children and adolescents with acute spinal cord injuries. PHSA Plus awards have been won by the Pediatric Spine Surgical Team in 2018, and the BCCH Pediatric Orthopaedic Spine Fellowship founded in 2015 has attracted orthopedic surgeons from around the world to spend one-year training with the team.

The Pediatric Spine Service at BCCH is currently the only provincial spine program for children and adolescents and hence is the single point of care for all spine conditions in the pediatric population of British Columbia. The service provides quaternary surgical care for all spinal conditions for patients throughout British Columbia. Approximately 4300 patients are seen with spine conditions in the outpatient clinic and up to 200 complex spine surgeries are performed annually.

What you'll do

This amazing role supports out-patient responsibilities with minimal support to the inpatient care. The priority of the role will be initially inpatient as part of the first phase; followed by outpatient post-operative follow up support. The second stage is to integrate an intra-operative component to the role.

The NP team will provide direct medical coverage and will function with autonomy and authority with day-to-day clinical care responsibility across the Ortho-Spine Surgery Program. The NPs will:

• Provide independent clinical assessment for "low-risk", non-operative spine patients in the out-patient clinic
• As part of the multidisciplinary team, develop and provide initial treatment plans and modify plans accordingly.
• Establish priorities for management of health conditions; provide follow-up treatment; communicate with clients and families about health findings, diagnoses and prognoses; support and counsel clients in their personal responses to diseases, disorders and conditions. Monitor clinical outcomes for efficacy. Provide transition support into adult care system as required.
• Collaborate and/or consult with spinal surgeons, anesthesia, and other specialists according to the complexity of care and communicate care plans with other members of the health care team. Accept referrals from, or make referrals to, physicians and other health professionals.
• Diagnose and treat diseases, illnesses and conditions within the Nurse Practitioner's scope of practice. This will focus on perioperative related issues within scope including wound issues.
• Diagnose and Order appropriate screening diagnostic investigations; interpret reports of investigations and analyze information to monitor progress and plan treatment.
• Make patient rounds as appropriate and monitor ongoing care, providing first line care in emergencies.
• Prescribe drugs within the statutory and regulatory standards, limits and conditions for Nurse Practitioners and within applicable employer policies and procedures. Apply knowledge of pharmacology and evidence-based practice in selecting, prescribing, administering and monitoring the effects of drugs to treat diseases disorders, conditions or injuries. The NP will prescribe, manage, and titrate medications inclusive of opioids as required as part of the perioperative care. Prescribe for and manage perioperative conditions within scope.
• Perform required and applicable medical procedures including advanced medical procedures and interventions within NP scope.

What you bring

Qualifications

• Current registration as a Nurse Practitioner with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM).
• Must be eligible to complete the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) through the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM).
• Minimum of (4) years of recent, relevant clinical nursing experience.
• Ability to perform the full scope of Nurse Practitioner duties and responsibilities.
• New graduate NPs are welcome and encouraged to apply, and will be provided with dedicated training and mentorship to help grow your Nurse Practitioner career.

Job Type: Regular, Full-Time

Salary: $106,038.00 - $152,429.00 / Year The starting salary for this position would be determined with consideration of the successful candidate's relevant education and experience, and would be in alignment with the provincial compensation reference plan. Salary will be prorated accordingly for part time roles.
