Are you someone who loves to solve big world problems using code and security work within innovative technologies? We’re in need of an expert in security systems looking to work with the next generation of mesh networks. You are highly technical, deeply analytical and not many speak your language. But we admire that about you. Specifically, you want to help design and implement systems to enable trust and security in a fully-distributed mesh network library within the bounds and restrictions of mobile phone development environments. Did we mention you’d be working on something that’s the first in the world of its kind?

You might be thinking, who is Left? Left is a technology company based in the suburbs of Vancouver in Maple Ridge. Our award-winning Community Engagement Program and our top-notch culture has led us to win an award as the “Best Workplace BC” and be recognized by the BC Tech Association as the best in Best in BC for “Work, Life, and Play”. At the heart of our business, we are building a platform to connect the next billion people without infrastructure using a fully-distributed mobile mesh network for Android and iOS mobile phone platforms.

Mobile technology has been growing at an exponential rate in the developed world and even more so in emerging economies. Our platform will enable affordable, reliable, resilient, and secure access to the internet and connectivity to all users. We are passionate about making our mark on the world, and this will be a way to improve efficiency, expand capacity, and increase throughput for everyone–particularly in developing markets. WAVE (Wireless Alternative in Variable Environments) is our mesh networking platform and YO! will be the first app to integrate this patent-protected technology and continue to test proof-of-concepts. Yep. We’re already well on our way!

Where does all this magic happen? We might have the coolest office space in the Fraser Valley, complete with a games room, library, lots of beer, and a plenty of silly people. We are purposefully located out in the ‘burbs so that our employees can live and work in their community. If you do commute it’s only 40 minutes against traffic from downtown Vancouver, and we’re just across the Golden Ears Bridge, so we are extremely convenient for all the talented people east of Main Street. And speaking of sky high real estate prices, you actually have room to breathe out here and can afford to exhale. Are you ready to change the world yet?

About the Job: So what will you be doing?

  • Live, eat and breath security through: brainstorming, whiteboarding, design, documentation & implementation of potential security, trust, and encryption mechanisms within our library.
  • Identify and select existing libraries, integrating them as well as develop new code.
  • It’s all about teamwork to help build the core communications technology.
  • Find comfort in making whiteboard presentations, defending ideas, and being challenged by an engaged and passionate team.
  • Come on, you know you want to audit our existing code too right?
  • Play (more professionally known as build) and test proof-of-concepts, evaluating their performance and documenting the process.
  • Ensure all code is stable, secure and developed in a way that makes it easy for both 3rd party developers and end users to use and deploy.

Essential Skills: What do you need to get here?

  • You have woven your passions into earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field.
  • You can passionately explain the inner working of various encryption and security schemes, identify their strengths and weaknesses, evaluate the performance, and implement them.
  • Experienced java, c/c++, objective-c developer.
  • Experience with Android Studio, Git, Unit-testing, deploying apps on Android & iOS.
  • You’ve proudly developed and released APIs/libraries that are used in other projects.
  • You learn new concepts fast and through your ability to communicate with highly technical material and experts.
  • You’ve developed p2p and decentralized applications, contributed to the networking and security.
  • You have experience with traditional web architectures (client/server, databases, web backends).
  • Your understanding of blockchain and cryptocurrencies can confuse any average individual.
  • You’re happy to show us your contributions to open source and can provide git repositories with contributions.
  • You are a communication wizard (written, orally, and with other cultures).
  • You hold yourself and others to high standards — because you believe the impossible is possible.

Useful Things:

  • You’ve taken it to the next level by earning an M.Sc or Ph.D. in CS, Computer engineering or other related fields.
  • Knowledge and curiosity, which is why you’ve published papers in the area of cryptography, security, and encryption.
  • You have patented some methods or mechanisms related to security and encryption.
  • Thinking outside the box is your thing, so you created original implementations of security and encryption mechanisms.
  • You show your love for teamwork through participation, mentorship or coaching in hackathons or coding challenges.
  • You have strong writing skills and demonstrate an ability to document code and APIs well.
  • Experience as a developer or security evangelist.

You still with us? Cultural fit is very important to us, so last but DEFINITELY not least…

  • You are entrepreneurial. This means you know failure is an option, but you also know that when you learn from failure, this is often when the impossible becomes possible.
  • We still classify ourselves as a startup even though we are an international office of 75+. We currently have about 15 in Maple Ridge and 60+ in Bangladesh, so you must want to be in the startup environment.
  • Maybe you have worked in a senior technical role already, or maybe you are just finishing up your Ph.D. and can’t wait to dive into the real world, but in any scenario, you wish to be part of a smaller team where you would have a direct impact on the business as a whole.
  • You must be a self-starter and able to take initiative and manage your own projects.
  • You can self-learn as things change; and quickly, because learning must be ongoing and things change often.
  • We are Dog positive; Django is our Director Of Greetings and he outranks most of us.
  • You must believe in the mantra of “Work hard, play hard.”
  • You must be able to laugh at yourself and roll with the punches.

Compensation and Next Steps

Your salary will be competitive and based on your experience; however, we are a startup and, as we build this out together, we will all share in the upside and increased compensation as revenues increase for the brands you are involved in.

If you are interested in working on a world-class platform and business, then please send us a recent resume (online links are fine) along with your salary expectations to [email protected] No phone calls or unexpected visits please because we have developers here and they are easily startled.

Left is a small, but growing company. Fit and a willingness to learn is more important than experience. Thanks in advance for considering us.
