Position:        Mechanical Engineer – Vacuum System Lead

Location:        Burnaby, BC, Canada

 

General Fusion is transforming how the world is energized by developing the first commercially-viable fusion power plant. Fusion will deliver clean, safe and on-demand power at industrial scale, providing a powerful complement to renewables and a pathway to a zero-emission grid.

Combining new technologies, proven industrial processes, and advances in fundamental fusion science, General Fusion aims to be the first in the world to develop commercial fusion power. Key performance requirements have been demonstrated at the system level, setting the stage for building a pre-commercial fusion power prototype.

 

Position Overview:

As a member of the Plasma Injector team, you will work as part of the team in the development of General Fusion’s Fusion Demonstration Plant. The work will focus on design and implementation of high vacuum system for the Fusion Demonstration Plant.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design, specification, testing, and implementation of the High Vacuum System for the Fusion Demonstration Plant
  • Design and implement the qualification testing for the vacuum pumps and associated control and diagnostic equipment.
  • Design the interface specifications of all Vacuum System components with the other systems in the Fusion Demonstration Plant
  • Work with other System Leads for the Fusion Demonstration Plant to ensure the successful implantation and integration of the Vacuum System with the other systems.

 

Relevant Skills and Experience:

 

Required:

  • 5+ years design experience with high vacuum systems including pumps, vacuum diagnostics and control systems
  • 5+ years’ experience with assembly and testing of large custom designed industrial equipment or experimental apparatus
  • 5+ years’ experience working with a multi-disciplinary team of engineers and scientists.

Preferred:

  • Good knowledge of Solidworks
  • Experience with large vacuum vessel system modelling and calculations
  • Experience with control system design for pneumatic valves

 

The work involved in this project combines a wide range of skill sets. Each team member will need to become familiar with the full scope of the plasma development and understand how their work relates to the whole system design. General Fusion seeks individuals who are self-motivated, have good communication skills and are comfortable with creative problem solving independently and within a group.

 

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or Engineering Physics
