General Fusion is transforming how the world is energized by developing the first commercially-viable fusion power plant. Fusion will deliver clean, safe and on-demand power at industrial scale, providing a powerful complement to renewables and a pathway to a zero-emission grid.

Combining new technologies, proven industrial processes, and advances in fundamental fusion science, General Fusion aims to be the first in the world to develop commercial fusion power. Key performance requirements have been demonstrated at the system level, setting the stage for building a pre-commercial fusion power prototype.

Position Overview:

As a member of the Plasma Injector Systems team, the Mechanical Engineer will work towards the development of General Fusion’s Fusion Demonstration Plant. The work will be focused on the mechanical design, assembly and testing of various subassemblies for use in the Fusion Demonstration Plant. The role will also involve providing engineering support to existing plasma injector experiments which will include maintaining equipment, optimizing designs and increasing reliability of existing components.

Key Responsibilities:

  • All stages of mechanical design
  • Generate detailed designs with good attention to detail
  • Create ready-for-manufacture drawings for various manufacturing methods
  • Work with purchasing agents to procure parts and answer vendor questions
  • Assemble and test complex components
  • Maintain and improve existing equipment
  • Direct and supervise work done by assembly employees

 

Relevant Skills and Experience:

Required:

  • 3+ years of experience in mechanical design
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical engineering principles
  • Good understanding of various manufacturing processes and manufacturability
  • Ability to assemble and troubleshoot complex assemblies
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and a strong ability to work hands-on
  • Ability to work with power tools and fabricate parts when needed
  • Flexibility to adapt to a rapidly changing work environment

 

Preferred:

  • Experience in designing prototypes in a research and development setting
  • Experience with high voltage/high current equipment
  • Experience integrating electrical subassemblies into a mechanical assembly
  • Ability to design and troubleshoot basic electric circuits
  • Good knowledge of SolidWorks

 

The work involved in this project combines a wide range of skill sets, and each team member will need to become familiar with the full scope of the plasma development and understand how their work relates to the whole. General Fusion seeks individuals who are self-motivated, have good communication skills and are comfortable with creative problem solving independently and within a group.

 

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Physics (with mechanical specialization)
