TRIUMF is Canada's particle accelerator centre, and one of the world's leading laboratories for particle and nuclear physics and accelerator-based science. We are an international centre for discovery and innovation, advancing fundamental, applied, and interdisciplinary research for science, medicine, and business.

At TRIUMF, we’re passionate about accelerating discovery and innovation to improve lives and build a better world. Equity, diversity, and inclusion are integral to excellence and enhance our ability to create knowledge and opportunity for all. Together, we are committed to building an inclusive culture that encourages, supports, and celebrates the voices of our employees, students, partners, and the people and communities we serve.

We are currently accepting applications for an early-career level Engineer who will be involved in the design, analysis, testing, and manufacturing oversight of the mechanical infrastructure required to incorporate medical isotope production into the ARIEL facility. Your work will be focused on the development of a proton beamline irradiation station, the target used to produce medical isotopes, and the pneumatic tube transfer system that will transport the targets between a processing hot cell and the irradiation station. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing the ARIEL medical isotope production mechanical infrastructure and associated interfaces, from conceptual design to commissioning
  • Establishing engineering requirements for components and systems
  • Developing documentation, such as manufacturing drawings, specifications, Engineering Change Orders (ECOs), and design review presentations
  • Prototyping and performing hands-on work to meet project goals
  • Coordinating and providing oversight for fabrication/construction, installation, and commissioning of facilities and equipment
  • Performing R&D tasks, simulation and analysis as required

You will also be required to successfully complete the TRIUMF in-house radiation safety training course and be designated as a TRIUMF Nuclear Energy Worker.

As our ideal candidate, you have a strong aptitude for working with and providing engineering guidance to a diverse team of multiple disciplines. You are an excellent communicator and have proven strong planning, project management, and organizational skills.  Your other qualifications include:

  • A firm grasp of mechanical engineering principles, including the fundamentals of mechanics of materials, dynamics, structural/stress analysis, fluids, heat transfer/thermal analysis, numerical methods, and finite element analysis
  • A working knowledge of computer assisted design (SolidWorks preferred) and document control, and a basic knowledge of HVAC, piping, and pressure systems
  • A bachelors degree in a relevant engineering field such as mechanical, mechatronics, or engineering physics and at least 2 years of relevant professional experience
  • Eligibility for registration with Engineers & Geoscientists British Columbia (EGBC)

While not required, the following would be considered a definite asset to your application: proficiency with FEA/CFD mechanical simulation software (ANSYS preferred); familiarity with diagnostic and PLC control hardware and software; and familiarity with electrical/electronics engineering fundamentals.

Applicants must be legally able to work in Canada for the duration of the term.

TRIUMF is located on the south campus of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC.  We offer a competitive total compensation package, including comprehensive benefits, attractive salary, and an excellent opportunity to enhance your career portfolio in a high profile national research facility.
