BCAA's Underwriting Team
has an opening for the position of Manager, Underwriting Operations
. The successful candidate will combine expert underwriting knowledge with strong people and leadership skills to maintain an engaged and highly-performing Underwriting Team.
They will ensure the Underwriting Team is well prepared to manage risk on home insurance in a consistent way, aligned with the strategic direction of the business. From a deep knowledge of the enquiries coming through to the underwriting team, they will look for opportunities to improve efficiency and customer experience in home insurance, while effectively managing risk. They will also support the team with escalations of a more substantial and technical nature, including referrals from the Claims Team. Being organized, people-focused and forward-thinking will be key to success in this role, as will demonstrating the ability to maximize the underwriting value generated from daily operations. 35 hour work week Key Responsibilities Include What you will be doing?Management of Underwriting Operations
•Manages all operational underwriting rules and processes to support an efficient and profitable sales distribution.
•Ensure underwriting rules and processes are well-balanced with other forms of risk control (e.g. rating), so that they create value through their application.
•Resolves escalation requests from the Underwriting and Claims Teams concerning the most complex underwriting matters.
•Collaborates with business and analytics stakeholders, and researches industry trends to find innovative ways to improve underwriting risk control, while balancing the impact with the strategic objectives of the business (e.g. customer experience).
•Ensure the Underwriting Team maintains strong service levels and close relationships with the Sales Network. Resolves network enquiries directly when necessary.
•Regularly reviews key underwriting operations metrics and progress with the Senior Manager, Underwriting Strategy.
•Communicates underwriting changes and updates to business stakeholders, using a variety of tools and methods to deliver the best results.
•Drafts coverage adjustment wordings when necessary.People
•Builds a high performing and engaged team, with strong emphasis on development, coaching and supporting team members to achieve their career goals.
•Regularly coaches team members, strengthening their underwriting and network support capabilities, and ensuring consistency in decision making across the Team.
•Builds strong relationships across the organization, in particular with the Sales Network, to ensure a collaborative and supportive approach to the management of underwriting risk. Other tasks
•Manages relevant components of the Underwriting Review process (audit).
•Acts as subject matter expert on relevant cross functional projects as needed.
•Gathers market intelligence to support business development opportunities.
•Keeps up to date on BCAA's reinsurance program, and ensures underwriting operations are managed in line with this.
•Supports and advises on relevant corporate training programs.
•Supports the development of department strategy, business plans, budget and shares general leadership responsibilities, as needed.
•Keeps up to date with, and advises on, relevant regulatory matters and legislation, as they relate to insurance.
•Keeps up to date with developments in the insurance industry, and works with other leaders to integrate into the strategic plan for underwriting. Minimum Qualifications What youbring to the role:Education, experience & accreditations:
•Minimum 5 years of underwriting experience, and 2 years of supervisory experience
•CIP or equivalent certification (or working towards)Required skills:
•Expert level of underwriting capability, including refined knowledge of coverage, wordings, and identifying and controlling risk.
•Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills, able to make well-balanced decisions that consider all perspectives of the business.
•Proven ability to make good decisions through thorough assessment of the situation.
•Ability to assess complex problems, building and presenting well thought out reports, presentations and recommendations.
•Well-maintained awareness of common industry practices, industry trends and direction.
•Strong leadership skills that inspire others.
•Proven ability to build high performing and engaged teams.

•Excellent communication & presentation skills.
•Highly collaborative, and quickly able to build and maintain strong relationships.

•Insurance Level 2 or 3 license an asset.
