The Senior Claims Examiner / Legal Counsel manages and directs contract counsel in defending claims against Risk Management Branch (RMB) clients. Counsel is also responsible for the provision of sound legal advice and decision making for reported claims against RMB (Risk Management Branch) clients commenced through various tribunals, regulatory bodies and at all levels of court, including Courts of Appeal and, occasionally, the Supreme Court of Canada (does not include the ministries of government). Counsel may recommend the appeal of adverse precedents and may make recommendations for procedural, policy or legislative changes.

Job Requirements:
In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education and experience as outlined below:

  • A degree from law school of recognized standing and membership OR eligibility for membership in the Law Society of B.C. plus six years' related experience, call to the Bar, and admission to practice in British Columbia.
  • Legal Counsel Level 2: 6 to 11 years of call.
  • Legal Counsel Level 3: 12 or more years of call.
  • Related experience includes working in litigation, providing legal advice, and preparing opinions on a variety of complex legal problems.
  • Preference may be given to applicants who have experience in health care, medical malpractice litigation and/or midwifery legal issues.
