Position Information

Location New Westminster Campus Salary Range
$32.04 per hour (with wage increments to a max of $36.06 per hour). Salary and wage increments are in accordance with the Collective Agreement.

The Earth & Environmental Sciences Department at Douglas College requires an on-call temporary Lab Facilitator to help support the EAES 1500 Field School. The first assignment will be from May 1st, 2026 - May 9th, 2026, including travel to Princeton (May 4 - May 9).

WHAT IT TAKES
In this role you will provide laboratory instruction, evaluation and supervision of students in the Earth & Environmental Science's EAES 1500 - Field Methods 1 course. Responsibilities will include: working with the leadership team to ensure safety of all participants, preparation of materials and equipment for the field school, driving students and equipment, working with small groups of students on assigned work/projects, and marking/evaluation of student work.

The successful candidate will have:

    • A BSc in Earth Science or Environmental Science from a recognized post-secondary educational institution or equivalent combination of training and experience.
    • Good working knowledge of course content; operation and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment and apparatus; modern techniques pertaining to the instruction of Earth and Environmental Science courses.
    • A Class 5 Driver's License with a good record (Driver's Abstract required)
    • Excellent working knowledge of preventative measures required of laboratory equipment.
    • Good working knowledge of the English language (written and verbal).
    • A demonstrated ability to:

      • communicate courteously and effectively in person, in writing, and over the telephone with students, faculty, administrators, staff, and the public.
      • maintain current knowledge in the field of geology.
      • work independently under minimum direct supervision, as well as establish priorities and achieve deadlines.
      • maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
      • effectively demonstrate proper laboratory techniques
      • work in the laboratory and in a rugged outdoor earth science field environment.

Additional Information

    • This on-call position is available starting May 1, 2026.
    • Hours of work will typically be scheduled between Monday to Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm. Scheduled hours range between 4 hours to 7 hours per day depending on the assignment.
    • Please note that the first assignment will take place from May 1st, 2026 to May 9th, 2026, and will consist of travelling to Princeton (May 4 - 8), and using rental vehicles is required. Food, travel, and hotel accommodation expenses are covered
    • Occasional evening and/or weekend work may be required.
    • The position is located at the New Westminster/Coquitlam campus; however, successful candidate must be available for occasional work at all Douglas College campuses and offsite locations.
