About our Client

We are assisting the Provincial Health Services Authority with a number of roles throughout Greater Vancouver and the Fraser Valley Regions. The Laboratory Assistant performs general laboratory and clerical procedures related to data entry, and the receipt, handling, accessioning, preparation and distribution of laboratory specimens.

These Lab Assistant roles are casual opportunities and will be instrumental in supporting COVID-19 testing work across the province. There are many shifts available and you can work as little as 2 shifts a week or as many as 5 shifts per week. Shifts are available for 7:30am-3:30pm, 3:00pm-11:00pm at a wage of $24.04 per hour plus 12.6% benefits in lieu. HOURS OF WORK: Variety of shifts available, including days, nights and evenings. Shifts are subject to change in response to operational requirements.

LOCATIONS: Vancouver Region & Fraser Health Region - BCCDC, Royal Columbian Hospital, Burnaby Hospital, Eagle Ridge Hospital, Ridge Meadows Hospital, Surrey Memorial Hospital, Jim Pattison Outpatient Care Surgery Centre, Langley Memorial Hospital, Delta Hospital, Peace Arch Hospital, Abbotsford Regional Hospital, Mission Memorial Hospital, Chilliwack General Hospital &Fraser Canyon Hospital


  • Prepares specimens for testing by performing duties such as centrifugation, aliquoting and loading samples onto specimen racks
  • Verifies, sorts and assigns laboratory numbers to specimens and applies barcode labels
  • Receives incoming specimens, checks for accuracy and completeness of information. Contact physicians or labs for missing information and makes necessary corrections.
  • Processes data into computer systems, obtains or clarifies missing information, corrects errors
  • Responds to telephone/fax requests for information
  • Files and organizes records
  • Identifies and communicates operational issues and computer/equipment-related problems to supervisor.
  • Stores and retrieves COVID-related specimens, documents and ships and discards samples
  • Prepares, records, and sends specimens and appropriate request forms to outside/referral laboratories and hospitals
  • Prepares test runs by pulling specimens for worksheet, matching specimens and requisitions and retrieving frozen samples for testing.
  • Orders and receives supplies.
  • Delivers samples and related documentation to and from in-house laboratory sections.
  • Maintains laboratory and testing equipment
  • Maintains daily cleaning and disinfection of work areas and equipment by performing duties such as: preparing fresh disinfectant solutions; wiping bench tops and equipment.
  • Keeps workstations well stocked with supplies.
  • Use of PPE including Hazmat suits will be required at times when handling live specimens
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


  • Grade 12 graduation.
  • One (1) years’ recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Previous work experience in a laboratory setting is ideally required
  • Type a minimum of 35 wpm.
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Work with others in a team environment.
  • Organized
  • Operate related equipment
