General Fusion is transforming how the world is energized by developing the first commercially-viable fusion power plant. Fusion will deliver clean, safe and on-demand power at industrial scale, providing a powerful complement to renewables and a pathway to a zero-emission grid.

Combining new technologies, proven industrial processes, and advances in fundamental fusion science, General Fusion aims to be the first in the world to develop commercial fusion power. Key performance requirements have been demonstrated at the system level, setting the stage for building a pre-commercial fusion power prototype.


Position Overview:


We are looking for a Junior Mechanical Engineer who will support the development of General Fusion’s Compression Systems through design and testing.  As a member of the Compression Systems team, the Junior Mechanical Engineer will work as part of the team in the development of General Fusion’s Fusion Demonstration Plant. The work will focus on mechanical design of components both directly for and in support of the Fusion Demonstration Plant.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Designing and building test prototypes to mitigate the potential risks associated with various aspects of the Fusion Demonstration Plant
  • Performing detailed mechanical design of components and systems, including analytical calculations and FEA as required to validate designs
  • Producing technical drawings of components for fabrication
  • Working with vendors and suppliers for materials and components procurement – both custom and off the shelf
  • Documenting design details, test plans, and experimental results
  • Working as part of a larger design team to develop the design for the Fusion Demonstration Plant prototype


Relevant Skills and Experience:




  • Strong knowledge of engineering and physics fundamentals, including statics and dynamics, fluid mechanics and thermodynamics
  • Good knowledge of creating 2D detailed drawings of designed parts for fabrication
  • Good knowledge of 3D CAD modeling, SolidWorks preferred
  • Mechanical aptitude and a willingness to work hands-on with the components of the design
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams in a fast-paced environment with rapidly evolving priorities



  • 3+ years’ experience in mechanical design
  • Experience in designing and testing prototypes in a research and development setting
  • Experience using SolidWorks Simulation, or similar
  • Experience using PDM systems
  • Knowledge of tolerancing and GD&T
  • Good working knowledge of materials and manufacturing methods
  • Hands on experience using fabrication techniques such as the mill and lathe
  • Ability to search literature for existing technologies or research that can be used to inform designs


The work involved in this project requires a strong mechanical aptitude, flexibility, and a passion for solving complex problems.  General Fusion seeks individuals who are self-motivated, have good communication skills and are comfortable with creative problem solving independently and within a group.




  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Physics (with mechanical specialization).
