Instructor, Heavy Equipment Operator Program

Founded in 1954, the Heavy Equipment Operating (HEO) Program at Vancouver Island University has become one of the largest post-secondary heavy equipment training sites in Western Canada. Today, the school operates 26 pieces of mid-size earth-moving equipment. We also have 2 mobile trailers with 4 motion heavy equipment/forestry simulators in each. Our 40-acre site south of Nanaimo has a multitude of staging areas where we replicate tasks associated with different industries.

As the Heavy Equipment Operator Program Instructor, you will be responsible for teaching all aspects of the theory and practical skills required to operate and maintain heavy equipment. You will undertake student evaluation and grading and work to ensure program standards are maintained. Your role as the Instructor finds you operating in a team-based environment to deliver both classroom and practical objectives for clients throughout BC.

Required Qualifications:

• Minimum of seven years recent directly related experience working in the trade as a Heavy Equipment Operator.
• Provincial Instructor Diploma (if in progress, must be completed within 2 years of hire).
• A strong mechanical background.
• Ability to operate and maintain at least four pieces of Heavy Equipment customarily used in Civil and Heavy Construction industry.
• Knowledge of current WorkSafe BC regulations and BC Construction 'Best Practices'.
• Familiarity with and demonstrated skills in teaching adults.
• Excellent communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills.
• Familiarity with and demonstrated skills using computer programs (word, excel, power point, outlook), Familiarity with and demonstrated skills using Heavy Equipment GPS systems.
• A high level of energy and enthusiasm.
• Responsive to diverse cultural and academic backgrounds and learning styles.
• Possess a valid Class 1 BC Driver's License (or as a condition of ongoing employment to acquire within one year of being hired) and have a satisfactory driving record (as specified in Vancouver Island Universities policy and procedures).
• Certified for Occupational First Aid Level 2.
• Valid OFA Level 2 Certificate.
