Indigenous Outreach Worker

The North Okanagan-Shuswap School District No. 83 invites qualified individuals to apply for the Indigenous Outreach Worker position.  This position is for 14 Hours per week.

 

THE DISTRICT:

The North Okanagan-Shuswap School District is a widely dispersed district which includes the five major communities of Salmon Arm, Sicamous, Sorrento, Enderby, and Armstrong.  The school district provides educational support for 5,900 K-12 students in twenty-two schools with a professional staff of more than 1,200 employees.  The North Okanagan-Shuswap School District is committed to enhancing a positive work environment for staff and a dynamic and supportive educational experience for students.

 

JOB SUMMARY:

In cooperation with the Supervisor, provides social-emotional support and enhances the success of Indigenous

students.  The District Principal of Indigenous Education is responsible for the overall Indigenous Education

department, program, staff, and works in collaboration with the school Principals, and Vice- Principals, in order

to implement the Aboriginal Enhancement Agreement and District Strategic Plan.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • In cooperation with the District Principal, creates a schedule for working in schools with vulnerable students.
  • Participates in school-based-team meetings, receives Indigenous students’ referrals, and attends other consultative meetings as required. 
  • Works as part of a multi-disciplinary team with teachers, counselors, administrators, and Indigenous Education staff.
  • Engages in problem solving with students and families using conflict resolution and restorative justice methods
  • Acts as a liaison for community agencies and referrals.
  • Works on a one-to-one basis with individual students or in small groups; works with parents/guardians and families.
  • Provides immediate intervention for problem-solving, or short-term counselling situations, with specific goals related to areas or concern.
  • Works with students/families in conjunction with Local Bands and outside agencies.
  • Follows School District No. 83’s protocols and procedures.
  • Provides reports and updates to FNEC and/or the District Principal on a regular basis or as requested.
  • Will on occasion be required to perform other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Bachelor of Social Work Degree.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture, history, and issues.
  • Two years current related work experience.
  • Direct experience in social/emotional support, case management, and referral processes.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a team member.
  • Ability to multi-task and priorize supports in a fast-paced and demanding environment.
  • Physical ability to perform job requirements.
  • Valid BC Class 5 driver’s license.
  • Training in cultural safety, decolonizing theory, or Indigenous studies considered to be an asset.
