As an Indigenous Career Advisor with Vancouver Coastal Health you will:

  • Report to the Director of Talent Development and Career Pathways and be accountable to the Indigenous Health team for related Indigenous workforce experience.
  • Be responsible for providing expert advice and developing corporate career mobility strategies and services to support Vancouver Coastal Health’s (VCH) Indigenous workforce.
  • Maintain strong internal and external working relationships to develop and evaluate Indigenous workforce career pathways and foster continuous performance excellence.
  • Working in close collaboration with other People team and Indigenous Health partners, identify career pathway needs, research and advise on emerging trends, advise on best practices and plans and carry out talent development initiatives to meet staffing needs.
  • Facilitate the end-to-end career pathway process by utilizing innovative, creative and professional career counselling methods, coordinating and developing material, and developing proposals for new and creative avenues for career mobility.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with representatives from academic institutions, professional associations, recruitment agencies, Indigenous Nations and other organizations and maintains an up-to-date directory of eligible candidates.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree (Masters preferred) in a relevant discipline.
  • Five (5) year's recent, related experience in direct career counselling as well as experience in program leadership or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • In-depth understanding and knowledge of Indigenous Cultural Safety and Indigenous cultures within Vancouver Coastal Health’s service region.
  • Current registration/membership with a recognized professional association preferred. A Certified Career Development Practitioner designation is an asset. Certification in StrengthsFinder or other human capital assessment tools is an asset.
  • Pursuant to Section 41 of the British Columbia Human Rights Code, preference will be given to candidates identifying as Indigenous including First Nations, Metis and Inuit.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Develops and maintains strong relationships with key internal and external partners to promote and enhance services provided with sensitivity to diversity and indigenous lens.
  • Practices the recognition, inclusion and support of all types and aspects of diversity at all stages of engagement, with an understanding of the issues faced by people from equity-deserving groups.
  • Experience working with or for Indigenous organizations and programs, including experience in developing working relationships with Indigenous communities.
  • Experience partnering with Indigenous organizations and communities, post-secondary academic organizations, and Indigenous career development organizations
  • Demonstrates experience in providing client-focused, innovative, motivational and enthusiastic career counselling and relationship building.
  • Extensive knowledge of career learning theories, and trends and principles.
  • Extensive experience using tools for career counselling methodology.
  • Demonstrates ability to lead, facilitate and consult effectively with a variety of audiences and interested parties.
  • Demonstrates time management and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrates excellent communication (both written and verbal), facilitation and influencing skills.
  • Advanced skill in current computer applications (including word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and database) experience working with Human Capital Management Systems is an asset.
  • Promotes VCH brand by providing effective and professional career counselling services to internal candidates.

The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and the provision of the Collective Agreement and applicable statutes. Successful applicants may be required to complete a Criminal Records Review Check.

As per Ministry of Health policy, all health care workers working in publicly-funded health care facilities are required to report their past receipt of certain vaccines or history of certain infections. Collecting these records will allow for offering of any missing vaccines, and for appropriate actions to be taken in the event of any future exposure to a communicable disease or during outbreaks. For all new hires and appointments to Vancouver Coastal Health, you will be asked to provide this information as part of the onboarding process.
